Official Tyson Fury vs Wladimir Klitschko Post Fight Discussion Thread

Because it's in fact meaningless. Fury won the fight, and by stoppage. In boxing even fighters with a granite chin can get dropped by a flush shot, and anyone can get dropped if hit flush when off balance. Not to mention punches you don't see coming hurt you more than those you see coming.
If there is anything to draw from that fight it's that Fury is a warrior who similar to Maidana, hurting him is often worse for the opponent because he becomes that much more dangerous and determined of a fighter.
Some say glass chin, feather fists. I say granite chin, hands of stone. Fury mauls opponents and stops them, and when he did get knocke down he got right back up and went to war. No bicycle, no quitting on the stool, no staying down like Khan vs Prescott.
Every fighter fights an opponent at some point in their careers that "they are supposed to beat" and they often do, that doesn't mean they will go through a fight unblemished. Give credit to the other fighter ffs, they are there for a reason beyond padding a resume, they are still high level professional fighters who got there by hard work, skills, and heart. I've landed great shots on pros and high level amateurs at my gym and make them miss often, that doesn't mean they are overrated or not good, it's just boxing - 9/10 they would beat me in a fight but that doesn't mean I can't get the better of them in an exchange from time to time.
I swear, people who are ignorant about boxing drive me nuts sometimes. Not you specifically, but so much of this is commonplace on NSB in general and it's sickening.Comment

Physical prime means nothing when you are getting hit by flush power shots that you are unable to defend - or rather don't know HOW to defend.
Of course I don't buy this point of view.
Wlad has not improved defensively or offensively in the years since he hooked up with Steward after getting knocked out by the group of sub contender journeymen. Steward calmed him down, made him more cautious, built up his confidence. That's all.
The Iggy and Thompson fights are good illustrations of this as he showed he still had the same basic flaws as he did against Sanders. Everytime Iggy feinted with his left, Wlad would jump back 2 or 3 paces. It became a dull staring contest as Wlad was terrified to engage.
A slow weak punching Thompson was able to constantly tag him with lead lefts. Sanders would have still found a home for his left against this alleged "prime" Wlad. His composure under fire is still terrible. A single step-in jab from featherfisted Pulev stiffened his legs and had him wildly swinging out with his left as if hitting an imaginary opponent at his side and then force clinching Pulev for 10 seconds to clear the cobwebs.
'Prime' Wlad was likely the 35 year old version that fought Haye - perfectly balanced in terms of physical peak and also mental strength and knowledge of how to overcome certain situations. Haye probably could have knocked out Wlad also had it been the 28/29 year old version or whatever he was when he fought Sanders.
Haye got a gift split decision win over an even more faded version of Valuev.
It seems the main contingent of Haye praisers today are actually Wlad fans that want to make his resume look better than it is. I attended the Wlad vs Barrett fight on the Lewis/Botha undercard and the Haye fight and it's clear the former version of Klitschko was better than the later.
The more aggressive Wlad from that fight would have probably knocked Haye out inside 6 rounds. The Wlad of the Haye fight would have probably lost if the proper rules were being enforced.
The fact that Wlad's defense is holding or clinching is quite irrelevant, because at the end of the day it is very likely if Wlad knew to do that as an almost reflexive action as it seems to be now, he likely wouldn't have got into the escalating situation with Sanders.
What he needed most against Sanders was a chin transplant. A notoriously glass chinned Hasim Rahman was able to absorb the the full Sanders artillery but Wlad couldn't stand up to a single Sanders left hook.Comment

How did he look old?? Because Jennings was trying to survive and did a decent job defending himself with his rather powerful guard? You do realize taller opponents have a harder time getting through shorter stockier fighters with exceptional guards like Jennings..

Wlad struggled against Jennings because he wasn't the typical cement footed no defense having bum that Wlad is used to fighting like Pianeta, Pulev, Leapai, Wach etc. Jennings simple lateral movement and high guard completely extinguished the severely limited klitschko arsenal. Max kellerman got it right when he said Wlad was struggling because Janitor Jennings was the best opponent Wlad fought in a long time.Comment

The Klitschko mob on this forum appears to religiously adhere to the circular logic that Wlad had a Kent/Superman transformation after his emphatic losses to sub contender journeymen because he hasn't lost in a while. If you spend 90% of your career fighting talentless bums likes of Piantea, Pulev, Leapai, Wach, shot CW Mormeck etc you're expected to win. There is nothing special about winning when you're expected to dominate. Not one of Wlad opponents is HOF calibre or anywhere remotely close to it.Comment
