Carson, Calif - In a collision of two highly-skilled, exciting southpaw featherweights in the co-feature on SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING, international amateur standout Vasyl Lomachenko (2-1, 1 KO), of Ukraine, won a hard-fought 12-round majority decision over previously undefeated yet untested Gary Russell Jr. (24-1, 14 KOs), of Capitol Heights, Md., to capture the vacant WBO world 126-pound crown. There were no knockdowns in the epic showdown between Lomachenko and Russell for the vacant WBO title that Lomachenko won by the scores of 116-112 twice and 114-114. Lomachenko, 396-1 as an amateur, was a two-time Olympic Games gold medalist (2008, 2012) who fought and lost for a world title in his pro debut.

396-1 amateur! There was a time I thought they should have ban Loma from fighting amateurs because he was that good.

he needed to excecute the gameplan better?

he began the fight trying to sit down on check hooks but none of them landed because lomo has terrific defense and footwork

then he tired to fight on his front foot but started shoe shining and hitting hair

his plan a, plan b, and plan c failed because lomo was better than him.

Loma felt his power and has zero fear of it. Rematch would be the same result. May even stop him this time.

In the near future, Loma would continue to have problems with top Latino-type fighters...

Lomachenko definitely won, but Russell did show a lot of heart & now one questions if it's that Russell ¿could take shots & handle punishment the way he did, or is it that Lomachenko doesn't have a lot power in his punches? Cause Lomachenko does have 6 fights in that "WBL"(or what ever) & they all were won by decision. Gotta see if Russell fights a guy with known KO power behind his punches(like Verdejo) & see if he gets hit with clean hard shots & depending how he handles those shots then one could tell.

If the "Latino-types" he fights in the future don't bother trying to make the weight, come in 11lbs heavier than him, and punch him in the nuts at least 3 times in every round, then yeah, I think he will have problems with them.

The difference between a contender and a journeyman is not how high they are ranked or even how much ability they have. The difference is that after losing, the journeyman just says, "He was better than me." and moves on to the next pay cheque. The contender looks for a reason why he lost and tries to put it right.
No fighter with a "winner" mentality will ever admit that his opponent is better than him. They will always look for an explanation for defeat and believe they can do better next time.
Racists look to their own prejudice as an explanation for everything, which is why they cannot see the truth about anything.
