      **********

Martinez’s age, inactivity and lack of fundamental defense was a much bigger problem than his surgically repaired knees. He has never faced a fighter who can invade his space and be quicker than him. Martinez may be faster than Cotto from a p4p stand point. But he’s not quicker than Miguel.

Even if Martinez was in his prime which I assume was between 2008-11, the Cotto that showed up in 2014 would have been a handful for him. I’m not going to wrack my brain and try to tell you who would win but here is the problem for Sergio. He has never faced a fighter who can invade his space and be quicker than him. Martinez may be faster than Cotto from a p4p stand point. But he’s not quicker than Miguel.

Sergio is an intimidator. He intimidates with his speed and his punching power. He was always the quicker guy on the draw. He would leave his hands down and dare you to step to him. If you did he would counter over your guard and under your guard. That worked well with slower hesitant fighters. But Cotto was able to invade his space and crack him. If Martinez was a prime rib Martinez he still would have been getting hit. He’s never been that hard to hit. That’s why he gets dropped so much. And we must note we have NEVER seen him in with a technically superior fighter who was as quick or quicker than him.

Joint damage is always the worst especially at his age...
Time to call it a day in my opinion.

Strenuous knee injuries are hard to rehabilitate 100% in your 20's let alone in your late 30's when muscle around the injured area to protect it is hard to build.

Cotto fought a good fight though but a 90% Martinez would've cut up Cotto worse than Margarito & Pacquiao did.

Think Martinez will have a farewell fight in Argentina against a lesser opponent before opting to retire.

Pacquiao can actually defend the left hook. He actually is defensively responsible. Martinez would have always been target practice for Cotto. He would have let off more punches I'm sure, but that so called big power was a mirage. He just feasted on bigger and slower fighters.

Sergio Martinez was never that good of a boxer. He was athletic enough to always find a way to have his hand raised at the end of the night. When you are that kind of a fighter, and you have over a year off, you have nothing to rely on to help you.

At the end of the day, the thing you have to realize like I said before in the sport of boxing is this...Miguel Cotto is a hell of a fighter and we can't take anything away from him because Sergio signed on the dotted line.

Sergio agreed to the fight bad knee, hand, age, time off....whatever. He could have came back and fought a "tune-up" but I don't think there was a legitimate opponent out there that he would have beaten that night.

Sergio isn't making any excuses, why the f is everyone else?

Besides all that, I think Miguel looked to have been in good shape, he was bouncing on his toes...Miguel Cotto showed up to win the middleweight title and he did that, regardless of the cirumstances. He got the job done, he did was he was supposed to.

It's up to Sergio to get himself ready to defend his title, which he didn't do.
