Comments Thread For: No Retirement Decision Just Yet For Sergio Martinez

Sergio Martinez’s return to the ring this past Saturday against Miguel Cotto had followed hand and knee injuries suffered in wins over Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. in 2012 and Martin Murray in 2013. He was battered badly in the first round against Cotto, suffering three knockdowns. He was shut out on the scorecards. His corner stopped the fight after the 9th round and as the 10th was about to get underway.

    He needs to retire.

His whole style is based on his legs, he was a shell of himself last night.

Give me a break...still deciding? The guy cant even throw a punch without falling over his own feet. Give it up, he had a good run. He managed to trick everybody into one last payday.

Martinez made the decision to retire last year after his hometown gift over Martin Murray. This was nothing more than a blatant cash-in against the most the marketable opponent they could reel in.

Even if his style wasn't based on athleticism, the fact that he couldn't get maximum leverage on his shots was the most disappointing thing of all. He couldn't even fight Cotto off him.

Stick a fork in this guy, he's done. Everything an elite boxer is supposed to have, Martinez has lost, movement, punch resistance, power, speed.

Unless he wants to keep feasting on bums, Sergio is done boxing.

I feel like Sergio needs to take some time off and then train with some real hard sparring to really see where his knee and movement are, then make the decision.

You must be joking, I guarantee you Martinez didnt even spar ONCE for the cotto fight. They were too busy trying to hide knee problems from the 24/7 camera crew.
