More like Haymon and Schaefer tried to squeeze Oscar for everything and leave him out to dry, accept Oscar smartened up and stopped them dead in their tracks before they could. Oscar is still a bigger name then Haymon or Schaefer, he still owns the majority share of GBP and he still has the biggest Mexican star in boxing under contract. After reading some of these comments, The first thing coming to mind is the scene from Goodfellas where Sonny (De La Hoya) and Paulie ( Arum) are sitting down discussing making Paulie a partner in his restaurant business. Paulie squeezed him for everything he had and left him out to dry. "It's not fair really"

This.......The interesting thing about all of this to me is that it was bernard hopkins who legitimized GBP when it first rose up. His affiliation w/ the company is what attracted fighters to the stable. Oscar's rep was as a pretty boy && didn't carry weight until B-hop signed on. Only then did their stable really expend. I suspect his departure along w/ that of Schaefer would absolutely be the undoing of GBP completely. Oscar has ZERO credibility on that front. Maybe he could begin again concentrating strictly in Southern Cali & w/ Mex fighters. Who knows...we'll see.Comment

I disagree. A) Oscar is about the youngest promoter out there. Roughly 20 years or more younger than most, B) He has already put his past behind him and is sober and is in control of his life, C) He can get a new CEO and Boxer spokespersons just like he did Hopkins, and even Hopkins has not indicated he is leaving. He still has the most name recognition and plenty of clout. He is and will remain one of the major players. Oscar is a fighter and that goes a long way in business at its most rudimentary level.Last edited by richardt; 06-04-2014, 10:42 AM.Comment

It's a blow for Golden Boy Promotion and for Richard, however they both walk away with further legitimacy because of each other.
1) Richard now has to find his own way in the promotion world. Plus that will have to be without the Golden Boy (DLH) name and without the fighters currently under Golden Boy. He may work with Mayweather, but Mayweather's nearing the end of his career. However, Richard's upside is just that, Mayweather's name. Richard has gained credibility from being involved with DLH and Mayweather, but he will have to figure out how to continue big. Venues, networks, etc may know him, but may or may not have confidence in him without the Golden Boy banner which has been so prevalent for years.
2) DLH takes a hit because Richard put in the work and has the experience. Now DLH has to focus on finding someone to replace him. Someone trustworthy who has the business savvy to handle the big business of boxing. May not be easy. However, that new CEO will have the Golden Boy name on his side to aid in his negotiations and acquisitions. Venues, cities, networks, etc already believe in Golden Boy based on name alone. So if they can find a CEO that is convincing enough to bring good ideas and relationship to the table, they might do ok.Comment

U don't get sober in one year. It doesn't work that way. Oscar has a lifelong battle with addiction to fight. That's not going away any time soon. In fact he still seems very irrational.I disagree.
