Comments Thread For: Mayweather-Maidana: Highest Selling PPV Of 2014, But…

Floyd Mayweather was issued his toughest tasks to date, both in and out of the ring regarding his May 3 win over Marcos Maidana at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. He survived his test in the ring, fending off a stiff challenge from a surprisingly competitive Maidana. The final pay-per-view returns, however, tell a bit of a different tale.

Those closest to the event continue to remain hush on the official amount, though all indications suggest final numbers much closer to 900,000 units sold than the targeted — or at least hoped for — 1 million mark.

A total of 900,000 would mean roughly $63 million generated in pay-per-view revenue, a figure that is averaged from the number of homes who pay standard price ($64.99) and homes who ordered the event in high-definition viewing ($74.99). The total is spectacular only when not taking into consideration the $37 million-plus total in guaranteed purses, including what was referenced beforehand as the most expensive undercard in pay-per-view history.

Floyd, Scheafer and Haymon fooled Showtime, big time. Unless there's a mega fight with Manny, Showtime is screwed. Maidana gets only 1.5 million to fight Floyd? LMAO!

        How is Showtime screwed?
Do you know the details of their contract with Mayweather?
Do you know if they've restructured the contract? What if CBS their parent company is willing to take the losses in order to compete with and beat out HBO?

Honestly, who cares about this kinda ****??. The only ppl who will argue over ppv numbers are pac and Floyd lovers and that's it! Another topic for them to debate in the never ending saga of the fight that will never happen.

this article was a bit misleading, way to spin really bad news.

yes the fight generated 63 million in sales but what the article fails to mention is that half of the PPV sales generated goes to cable and satellite providers.

so in reality the PPV sales earned 31.5 million, that's not enough to cover Mayweather's purse.

when you include the live gate the fight might have broke even but still no matter how the writer wants to sugar coat it this PPV was a fail.

which sucks because Maidana was game.

Hows it misleading? It has a very negative tone to it, outlining that it under performed
