I think Calzaghe would have beaten Hopkins at any point of his career, a prime Roy Jones would have starched him though.

As for the thread in question, Joe needed to come to america, america didnt need to come to joe.

You make your name in america because everybody goes to america to seek fame and fortune when it comes to boxing.

          Roberto Duran came to america.
Julio Cesar Chavez Sr. came to america
          Manny Pacquiao came to america
          Lennox Lewis came to america
hell even the k brothers went to america.

Joe only came to america when the two guys in question were in their 40s. Those two 40 year olds subsequently dropped this overrated slap master.

Imagine what would have happened if they fought in their primes?

Ya'll love to bring up the fact Hopkins and Roy were past prime...but so was Joe...And Roy was not 40 he was 39 and Guess what Joe was 37...so lets not act like Joe was in his prime and young...im mean just keep it real
Fighters age differently dummy. Everyone does.

              Dirk Diggler UK,

Roy Jones also mentioned Calzaghe in a magazine interview as a possible opponent at 168. It wasn't just on the BBC in the UK.

I don't blame Calzaghe for having that attitude. He was making the most money he could fighting at home.

Your idea that he should just drop his title, go to America and fight to become a mandatory for Jones is not realistic on so many levels. He needed a big fight in order to become a name before he went to America - that didn't come until the Lacy fight, by which time Roy was already on the slide.
That's right, it was just a mere possibility. Nothing else. He said he could make 168 if the deal was right. In the end, he went with a better option.

I never said that he should have dropped his title. Again, I appreciate the predicament he was in. But it's a fact that without either moving up to 175 or fighting in America, he was never going to get a big money shot against Roy back then.

If he'd have moved up = There'd have been a chance.

Without moving up = There was literally no chance of it happening.

You have to look from Roy and HBO's perspective.

He wasn't a mandatory, and he brought no money to the table. Like you've said, the U.S. fans didn't really know anything about Joe until he'd hammered Lacy in 2006. But Joe could have changed that. He could have made himself a name sooner. There's things he could have done that he didn't.

He never wanted to put in the groundwork like Ricky Hatton did. He could have tried to have made a name for himself and moved up the rankings at 175. It is realistic to say, that he could potentially have found himself as Roy's mandatory.

I agree, in my eyes, somebody like Ricky Hatton will always be better than someone like Calzaghe.

That's right. But after contradicting himself like he did, he was never going to get any credit for beating Roy.

                      Dirk Diggler UK,

Did you see who Roy was fighting around that time? Come on now. Neither of them went out of their way to make the fight happen. They were both doing their own thing.

Calzaghe vs Hopkins was a viable fight and they were in serious negotiations until Bernard walked away.
It's completely irrelevant what Roy was doing at the time.

Roy was already a three division champ, and the unified 175 champ. He was also considered the best fighter in the world.

But we're not looking from Roy's perspective, we're looking from Joe's. We're not looking at why Roy didn't fight Joe, we're looking at why Joe fighting Roy was never viable.

Of course Roy didn't go out of his way to fight Joe. Why would he have done?

Again, the point is, Joe had to go out of his way to fight Roy, if he'd have really wanted to. You have to go to the champ and make sacrifices if you want him.

With regards to Hopkins, the situation needs looking into again in my opinion.

Because I don't believe he outright ducked Joe. I believe he declined the terms of a three fight deal, that Joe was a part of.
