ive always said this. comebacks are what make the sport of boxing so great. in mmgay, we never even get to see a guys heart get tested because the second he gets dropped with a nice punch, the other guy stampedes him and the fight is called off. how is that exciting? where is the warrior spirit, where is the heart to continue? maybe they have it, maybe they dont.. but thats the whole point. WE DONT KNOW because the very nature of the sport is flawed. fights are called off before getting a chance to continue. we never get to see a guy get hit with a monster punch, and try to make the standing 8 count, then go on to win the fight. THAT is excitement.
and before you think im some mma noob, ive been watching it since 2004 and have forgotten more than most people will ever know. these are the facts though. ive seen frankie edgar display heart but hes an exception to the rule. 90% of fights end prematurely and we never get to see comebacks or exciting back and forth wars.
gloves are the reason boxing is exciting. only teens and people with ADD want to see a quick knockout. who the **** really wants to see a 40 second knockout in the 1st round, from the 1st punch landed? im looking at you cain velasquez vs dos santos... what exactly does that prove? that doesnt prove **** on who the better fighter is (as evidenced by cain whipping his ass to a decision in the rematch/rubber match) ...fluke knockouts are a constant thing in mma and they are not exciting at all, nor do they prove who the better fighter is seeing how a rematch could simply go the opposite way.
off topic, boxers hit 1000x times harder than even the hardest punching mma fighters, and their chins are 1000x harder. its not because the gloves are 4 ounces that we see a lot of KO's in mma, its because the guys have mostly glass chins. they dont spar 1000's of rounds and are not conditioned to take punches like a boxer. plus they are not elite athletes to begin with. in boxing there is a heavy weeding out process, so the hardest hitters/best chins all rise to the top and they are who you ultimately see in the pros. unlike in mma, any joe shmo can walk in off the street and compete since there is barely an amateur program. elite boxers and "elite" mma fighters are a very different breed.
i promise you that if a random person stepped into the ring with an elite boxer, he would have an absolutely 0% chance of pulling off a fluke upset. but if that same guy went into the ring with an elite mma fighter, hed lose 90% of the time, but he would actually have a small chance of pulling off a fluke win. you will NEVER see that happen in boxing.
