Why do fighters with power get hyped up without proving themselves?

And yea Wilder should be on that list, he doesn't get much hype but what he get's is only because he puts dudes out. Even though I like him he is pretty much the most clear example of this because what else is there to him.Comment

All sarcasm aside, Larry does make a good point.
I remember people thought Matthysse was this unstoppable force of nature until the Garcia fight. Eye swollen shut or not, if Matthysse was the beast people made him out to be, he still would have have blasted Garcia out.
Even though GGG hasn't lost, I think the hype for him has faded some, but for a while it was out of hand.
Kovalev isn't getting the same hype as the other two. As I stated earlier, Stevenson would be a great test for him and its a real shame that it doesn't look like the fight will happen any time soon, if ever.Comment

Because people love to see knockouts. I agree that we tend to overhype guys with power. As for Kovalev, until he beats someone credible I wont be 100% sold. He showed some nice body shots too in his last fight so I can tell he can vary his attacks, but lets see. But lets be honest here, Kovalev looks scary in the ring. Looks like he hits hard as hell. Someone will have to come with great defense to neutralize his offense. I think Bhop could do it.Comment

power is the most hyped attribute in the sport. the sad part is most fighters with power dont have the skills to go along with it. so ppl like to make up skills for them. guys like bute, mathysse, abraham, stevenson and kovalev come to mind. i honestly think golovkin has real throwback in-fighter skills. its been a while since ive seen someone with that ability. his resume is still trash tho.Comment

Kovalev has proven himself several times. Wins over Cleverly are Campillo are impressive wins, especially considering both of them should have been champs. Cleverly was a champ, but Campillo got robbed against Cloud. That's two good wins.
GGG has also proven himself with his destruction over Matthew Macklin. It's funny, because I can look up some posts here, prior to the Macklin fight, the GGG critics were saying how this will be his first big step up in competition and if he wins they'll get reassurance that he's the real deal. There are many of those posts. He blows out Macklin in 3 rounds, the same guy btw who Martinez went life and death with, and those who criticized him on here are still not sold on him. Which is amusing.
Matthysse, with as many flaws as he has, did blow out Lamont Peterson, who is also a good fighter in his own right.
So they've proven themselves multiple times, but you have to get over a certain bias that you have against those fighters.Comment

Stevenson is the lineal champion hard to be a hyped up lineal championComment

Power in boxing is like the homerun hitter in baseball. A homerun is the best hit you can get in the game of baseball, a KO is the best punch you can land in Boxing. Is it really that hard to understand? The hype comes from hope. WE HOPE these guys become champions. WE HOPE these guys continue their glory and give us amazing memories. Imagine watching an entire baseball season realizing that there could be no more homeruns. Let's say they took the walls down. How exciting would that be? Same with the big kO in Boxing. If there was no suspense, we wouldn't pay attention. And guys like B-Hop, Ward and Mayweather offer ZERO suspense. There's nothing good about watching guys pop shot then hold. Sorry, but that's not fighting to me. You say the sport has evolved, you say the athletes have evolved. But I say they've devolved. The refs need to step in and stop this "safe" nonsense and make these ***** ass mother ****ers engage. Win a tactical fight by actually fighting. Just like that gay ass fight before Kovalev/Agnew. That fight had the potential for fireworks based on the "hype" surrounding both fighters. Especially Mayfield. But what did we get? Two ***** ass mother ****ers terrified to engage. You can still be "defensive" and "skilled" and actually FIGHT. Not just neutralize your opponents attack while doing just enough scoring to win the fight. That is olympic style boxing. AMATEUR bull****.Comment
