Mr. Pain's comments were pretty self-evident. He appraised those victories accurately. I don't see how you're interpreting that he was trying to "downplay those wins."

I can't imagine what "much bigger fights" there might be for Mikey. Are there more competitive fights? Perhaps. Yuri isn't looking like his old self lately, but I do believe his name remains among the best known in the division. Notice that very few people seem to give a damn about an Uchiyama fight. Even though it might be better, from a boxing standpoint, a Gamboa fight stirs more interest.

Let's be honest, Rocky Martinez was a paper champion who had arguably lost his last three fights (including a gift against Burgos).

Mikey deserves credit for Burgos and Salido (even though the ending left a bad taste in boxing fans' mouth).

Two things:
1. these guys are not on Gamboa's level
2. Mikey and Gamboa have more or less the same resume in term of quality.

Even though Yuri's not looking like the Gamboa of old, I'll still argue this all...day...long.

But in reality, what has Gamboa done lately to make anyone think he has any kind of chance to beat Garcia? His name alone is not big enough to make this a big fight. I'd like to see it just to see Gamboa get dominated, but I can live without it too.

These are the fights Mickey's supposed to be taking on his way to the top. People are getting mad at Russell JR cause he's fighting for a belt without beating anyone. Khan lost a fight with Floyd cause he hasn't done much in the last couple of years. These type of fights keeps Mickey relevant. Example Quillin. He's been fighting C level fighters on other people's undercards for far too long people barely respect him now. This is by far the best fight from 130 and 135 at the moment.

Mickey may be lined up for bigger fights in the future but for right now he has some business to take care of at that weight class. Otherwise he'd be skipped up two more weight classes, get his ass kicked by some bigger guy, then people will scream he was brought up to quickly.

First it was Lara and Canelo and now it's Mikey and Gamboa.

And Rances is coming up along with Socarras, Abril still a Champ, Ortiz is the #2 ranked HW, Dorticos is kicking a$$ left and right and his competition is stepping up, who else is outhere? Ugas and Jhonson could make a little noise along with Franco and the kid that draw quigg, Gonzalez, Savigne are looking good, I know they are a few that escaping my mind now but what we really need is a few of the 19-20 years old kids from the National team to leave the country and joint the professional ranks...

Neslan Machado is a 17 year old Cuban kid you yourself mentioned some time ago. If Robeisy Ramirez defects, he's a great prospect for stardom. As more Cubans make their mark as pros, more Cubans will follow their lead. It happens in every field, within every race and culture. You're seeing it in baseball. Jose Abreu, the Cuban ballplayer that signed a multi-million dollar contract with the Chicago White Sox, said in a recent interview that he was influenced by the Cuban defectors of the last few years. The movement has begun, and there's no end in sight.

I agree, but the same goes for Gamboa and he needs to generate interest for the fight to be made.

I would love to see this fight, I just understand the reality of the business. You can't just make the fight that the hardcore fans want to see. You have to make a fight everyone wants to see and make sure the networks are on board.

Boxing isn't like riding a bike, you need to stay active to be sharp. Not everyone is Floyd.

Cubans are excellent athletes and come from a great boxing school.

It was Mexico vs PR at first.

Then it was Mexico vs The Philippines.

Now they are saying it will be Mexico vs Cuba.

Do you see a common denominator in all those examples?




I hope we do see another great rivalry come on, I really do. Even though it won't be as intense because Mexico and Cuba have always been on good terms as countries go. Remember Mantequilla Napoles.

Fair enough, Gamboa seeking Mickey is good for business though, young fighters being put in with good opposition is what makes great fighters. I personally think it's a 50/50 fight, Gamboa isn't my fighter, I simply want to see a good fight. The winner could honestly go on to fight the bigger names. I think it's a good spot for either one to be in and test the waters at that weight before moving up. The real competition starts at 140 and there's a lot of guys there that are bigger, stronger, faster. This sets them up for those fights.
