I'd say the crab style is different to the shoulder roll style defense.
The Crab style is more like Ken Norton or Archie Moore.
The "Shoulder roll" is a little different, albeit similar.
Hard to differentiate because they're similar.
The Shoulder roll we see being used today by Mayweather and Toney etc was orginiated by George Benton. Who's ironically from Philidelphia. Which has no link to the "Philly Shell" which I don't think is an actual term for the style or atleast I'd never hard of it until recent years.
The whole style of rolling your sholders and crossing your arms over to avoid punches has been used and variated for over 100 years.
