no, not really. in fact prime hatton gets severely overrated in the UK which this thread is a perfect example of. hatton on his best day could never have beaten a truly elite fighter anywhere near the top of his game.

      good fighter, far from great.

He would beat everyone at 140lbs now if it was prime Hatton.

When he was fighting he was very overrated.

I'd say right now, he's underrated.

He had a whole lot of flaws and made a whole lot of mistakes but he was tough, quick feet, closed the gap well (Especially early in fights) good power, good body shots and tough tough tough guy.

He was a good fighter for sure. Not HOF calibur but a good fighter for his day.

It's like this Hatton loses to Pacmana and Floyd and he's considered a bum.

Cotto loses to Floyd, Cotto, Trout, Margarito, Clottey should've won too and he's so much better.

I don't know if Floyd knocks Ricky Hatton out at 140. Ricky should've never played with his weight and go up to 147. Collazo proved that.

                  Ricky Hattons PRIME was SHORT

We make excuses for certain fighters, i.e mike tyson being shot at 24 because of prison etc.

Ricky Hatton was a guy who drank to excess, had a terrible diet, took class a drugs etc etc etc. as a result, his body was ruined at a young age.

When Hatton was in his prime (up to the tzsyu fight imo) he was a fantastic fighter.

Look at those early fights, head movement, speed of hand and foot, volume punching, very good pop, the tenacity of a bulldog, heart, chin.

The guy was a different fighter back then. in his later fights he was different, his volume dropped, his head movement vanished, he was a pale immitation.

Both moves to welterweight ruined him. Collazo softened him up and Mayweather all but destroyed his once terrific punch resistance. He was never a true welterweight. But even on his returns to light welterweight post Mayweather his chin was never as good again.

Granted, his lifestyle choices were terrible.......and the repeated weight loss was going to impact on his performances at some point.

But at his absolute prime 2004/2005 I'd have thrown him in with any light welterweight in the world and be confident of him acquitting himself very well. I think a Mayweather fight in 2005 at light welterweight would have been a much closer affair. I'm sure Hatton would at the very least survive the distance.

                    he gets rated just right
he was tough and entertaining, he beat some decent guys
his star power was greater than his merit, but people knew that
Hatton only gets shit on in flame wars concerning other guys
just talking about his own career, he gets proper respect

I like Hatton, but I don't think many people underestimate or overestimate him! He simply was what he was, a very good pressure fighter that made the most out of his career..

Again he was good but not great, he had a good win over a past his sell by date Tszyu, then went on to beat some capable guys like Collazo, Urango, Castillo and Malignaggi (Who certainly didn't perform on the night)

He also didn't fight Cotto when both guys were top of the 140 division so that's a negative point.

Other than Senchenko, who Ricky would have murdered in his prime, he was beaten by the best around at the time in Mayweather and Pacquiao.. But it also says that when he did step up he was beaten, and beaten well!

One thing I loved about Hatton though was his Footspeed, there's very few guys around these days that have as good Footspeed as ricky!
