I just watched the replay of the fight, because I was live at MSG last Saturaday. So I recorded it to take my time and analyze the fight as a some what neutral person.
3 Things come to mind when I watch this fight, for everyone discrediting Cotto's fabulous performance.
1. Martinez started the fight on his toes and moving well. Didn't look like the knee was any kind of issue.
2. That first Solid left hook Cotto landed was devastating. When I was at MSG it sounded as good as it looked on TV. Man after watching the replay it's no wonder Martinez was asking for ICE on his neck the whole fight. And this made Martinez Wobbly for the first 4 rounds.
3. At the beginning(1-4) of the fight Matinez constantly had his right hand down and was circling to his right and Cotto was landing that left hook at will. I don't care if a super prime Martinez was fighting Cotto that night, the strategy was wrong from the get go. Towards the middle rounds(5-7) Martinez stated to move left and gained a little more success, but still had his right hand down, and Cotto was cutting of the ring magnificently.
The point is Martinez always relied on his reflexes his whole career. He was never a defensive responsible fighter. And it showed when he fought Cotto. Cotto could have just fought with that left hook all night and Martinez would have still lost due the fact his right hand is always down.
I honestly think Martinez had more ring rust than any issue with his knee. And I always criticized the fact that he did not spar alot before his fight with Cotto. Ring speed can not be imagined. Poor preparation, and thinking Cotto could not hurt him cost Martinez badly. Aside from the fact Cotto came in there like a semi truck.
Martinez kept his hands up for most of the fight. He rarely did that taunt where he puts both hands down and sticks his chin out like "come on, hit me", using head and upper body movement to evade punches. Cotto must have really put something on him in that first round . I also noticed that Martinez borrowed one of Mayweather's bodyguard's trunks, to hide his knee.
