Its not even about greed. I believe the semi main on a ppv is a valuable spot for fighters like rigo and tim, for example, who are very good or great but don't seem to have a fanbase.

I think you can help build their base, which should help them main event later. If they don't become main event headliners they can become quality opponents for the bigger stars-if they win that fight then they can easily headline.

Look, why do you think Matts/Garcia was on the undercard? You don't really think it was about boosting sales do you?

    • Wow I was seriously considering buying the Pacquioa fight. Havent since the last Marquez fight. Wont be buying this one. He just basically admitted he don't give a **** about real boxing fans. Thanks Bob. Now wonder half your undercards are ****ty. Newsflash. We care. And admitting you don't care about real boxing fans will lose you PPV's. Now wonder Manny is getting blown out by Floyd. What a dumb statement. Mayweather would never say that ****.

      • Bob Arum is full of shit as usual. He has to make such claims because Top Rank doesn't have the talent pool to put on under cards the way GoldenBoy does. Top Rank is thin on the talent pool so oldman Arum has to spread his thin talent across all his PPVs.

The sooner this guy disappears form boxing, the better it'll be.

        • bob arum should go back to the 80s & 90s & watch what don king did. his undercards kicked ass! he'd have Julio Caesar Chavez as a co-feature to amike Tyson fight. plus there would be a couple other important HW fights as well... old bob talking out his arse again...

          • Arum is so wrong with this. Even if the undercard gets you 10 to 15 percent more buys is worth it. The main event is the biggest motivating factor to buy it but a strong undercard makes it a solid buy and might turn more ppl to buy them.

He just don't want to invest on the undercard so if the event flops its not a total loss. He will milk the other fights in their own events. Arum does not care about the fans, his fighters or the consumer, he only cares on how much money he is going to make

Question did the tickets not sell-out the first day they were on sale? And was the undercard even announced when they sold the tickets?

And if Garcis vs Matthysse fought September 7th instead of the 14th would that have been a PPV card? Of course not stop hating. It was great for the undercard but didn't impact the PPV numbers like that.

If that was case Golden Boy being a business to make money and they felt Garcia/Matthyse could have brought in great numbers on their own would they not have made that a separate event to maximize their profit?

              • NO no no Bob!! 90% of the fans don't care about Top Ranks undercards because they are always ****!!!! Also you don nothing to promote or hype undercard fights so why would there be any interest. Everyone was very pumped to watch Mthysse vs Garcia.

                • I get what he's saying from a general consensus stand point. Viewers who aren't actual boxing fanatics buy fights bc of main event. But at the same time. This is 2014. And this is the reason that crap like mma is gaining steam! The general public wants to be entertained, wants excitement. They will buy if you advertise and offer exciting match ups.

The problem is he is in a position to correct this. Instead of simply marketing the main event, he could do what GBP does or King used to do and market the 2 big fights or the whole card.

This is what I don't understand about Rigo. why doesn't he just have him fight 3 times a year as the semi main on Manny and Chavez cards.
What happened to "boxing is a business"? Putting more stars on the card means more money out of Bobs pocket. Why would a businessman do that?

                    • Bob is pretty much right. When I watched the Canelo/Floyd fight at a friends house no one was really watching the undercards. The only reason people watched the Garcia/Lucas fight was because I was hyping it up when I got there. Whenever I throw a fight party there is usually a mad rush right before the main event starts.
