Two very different defenses; Floyd has the better technical/textbook defense while Sweet Pea had the better reflexes and athleticism to accompany his defense.Comment

Styles play their part. Whitaker was in the danger zone more often to set up his high output, particularly to the body. Whereas Floyd usually maintains a longer distance so as to lessen exchanges and keep it more widely in his favour.
You could say his mean streak isn't as close to the surface as Whitaker's was. It's certainly there as we saw against Mosley and Judah, but it's not as prevalent it was for the more active (and rougher) Whitaker.
Both have great defense. Whitaker displayed his more often against better opposition, so he has to get the nod to be fair.
There isn't a whole lot in it though.
Good post.I used to think it was Whitaker and it wasn't even close. But as Floyd's career progresses, it really is amazing how little punishment he's taken fight to fight. He really is a defensive master on par with Whitaker. But I still have to give Pea the edge because of his high quality of opposition.Comment

Thats because hes cherry picked the right opponents willing to make him look good.
Sweat pea was a real class act. Wasnt afraid to mix it up. Nor ducked anyone. Or asked for Blood:WORD:Comment

This is why Floyd is the better defensive fighter.Floyd. Sweet Pea & Rigo are very similar in that they are the same exact style every second of every round of every fight and they are also Southpaws which is much easier to be effective.
Floyd uses mulitple defenses and styles. He can switch up not only from fight to fight but round to round and he's a righty which is always easier to hit. Floyd uses the roll, the high guard, the crab, hands out front, etc.
Versatility.
If one thing doesnt work he has the ability to switch up to another defensive masterful style, and so on and so on, round to round if need be.
Utilizing his entire body, not just upper body movement. He has his whole body masterd, every muscle is working for him, the most important being his brain, carefully calculating inches and minute mistakes his opponents are making, and making them pay less than a fraction of a second later.
Thats amazingLast edited by blacraven; 01-10-2014, 01:20 AM.Comment

All you gotta do is rewatch de la Hoya vs sweet pea and you'll side with with "sweet pea". Even past his prime that was a sweet performanceComment
