And when he faces a southpaw, he uses the high guard, which in turn gets his face mashed in. His bread and butter is the shoulder roll.

    Ex. Corley, Judah, Ortiz.

    Soon to be Manny.

Which is why I made the particular argument I did. Mayweather has taken less punishment. This is true. However it is Whitaker who had the greater gift. Mayweather uses distance. And he uses the shoulder roll incredibly sparingly - when he's trapped. Whitaker would use his just head and his waist.

Quality of opposition doesn't matter? Come on folks.

I honestly don't know how anyone can watch both fighters and not see that Pernell is a better pure defensive fighter.

That's like touting Klitschko's knockout record.

We can look at the 2 of them prime for prime as well. Pernell's defense was primarily based on his ability to weave, dip and evade shots without even putting his hands up, literally standing there leaving his opponents dumb founded. Floyd on the other hand was not only able to do that, but the mans shell was/is uncrackable. Truly it is. His reflexes and Blocking ability are both full proof. And the coke argument is weak as well. Past prime Pernell was still an elite defender.

Have you ever watched a Pernell fight?

He did all the things you mentioned, and used his jab, parried, blocked inside body shots with his elbows with PERFECT timing. Like something out of a boxing handbook. Had perfect timing on head shots with his gloves.

                    Are you joking, man?

Oh, I forgot he fought 45 bums who all just so happened to stylistically present nothing different from one another which is why Mayweather's defense was so good. It's all a conspiracy.
