  • Comments Thread For: “Fighting Words” - On Mendez and Two Punches Too Late

by David P. Greisman - Perhaps the most maddening thing about Rances Barthelemy’s late-hit knockout of Argenis Mendez isn’t what happened, or even how it happened, but rather that those in charge apparently need to be convinced that it happened in the first place.

There should be no doubt that Mendez and his promoter, Iron Mike Productions, will file the necessary protests and appeals with Minnesota’s athletic commission and with the International Boxing Federation, the sanctioning body whose belt was previously held by Mendez, a belt which belongs, for now, to Barthelemy.

The correct ruling should’ve been made in the arena. Minnesota doesn’t utilize instant replay. Officials shouldn’t have even needed it. Yet the major sports have found ways to use technology to review controversial calls. Boxing, as usual, tends to err on the side of error. [Click Here To Read More]

Whats funny is I wanted really hard to believe this article was unbiased but somehow I had a hard time focusing on it because of those advertising banners must be just me.

    100% objective article.....seems legit.

You often see refs lose track of the clock if the guy goes down late and 10 second bell rings during the count. This guy seemed to

So, tell us what exactly you found to be biased? You have the right to disagree with whatever you want but don't do like a lot of people when you ask them a question and their answer is similar to "just because". Come on now. Yes, I am a Mendez fan (as if it was not obvious) but I like to think that I try to be fair. And just like the article, yes, I believe that Mendez was about to be knocked out legally but that's just it in boxing you never really know and that's where I have a problem with the ending...plus the fact that the blows were illegal no matter how you try to spin it.

It's called a conflict of interest look it up. That's why I didn't even bother reading the article you cant write an article while the guys you are defending are paying you. I didn't even bother reading the rest after I saw that banner common you gotta be a real hardcore Mendez fan to not see how wrong that is. My opinion was In the end the legality or not of intentional fouls are judged by the ref he deemed they where not intentional or foul worthy much less DQ worthy there is no "automatic" DQ penalties in boxing ref's assess fouls and their severity and that results in penalties everyone knows that.

This ain't ping pong or any other sport where there are intangible rules a lot of boxing is up to judges and refs accounting for fouls being one of them. And this comes from a guy who is not a fan of either guy from what I saw neither are all that.

We just watched the replay at work, on Friday I thought the punches were close, but after watching it over and over it looks worse than what I first saw.

Commission needs to change that to a NC and give the belt back and let Bart beat him without controversy.

That would be fair and order a rematch but people talking about DQ over something unintentional like that DKSAB.

NC, rematch, and get a ref who isn't incompetent.

Yeah, I think a DQ is a little excessive.

all this is centering around a ref's slowness & inability 2 reqct, which Pete Podgorski is noted 4, a very poor ref...his big knock, from what I've been told is he endangers boxers by letting bouts go 2 long...
