Agree, but it's not like he would have won anyway, it's the fans choice and Rigo is not a fan favourite.
I don't think anyone should take too much from this other than to acknowledge the boxing public loves Golovkin.
Its fine to love him but to vote for him for fighter of the year is preposterous. But he has a strong backing from HBO that seems to have a havy influence on how people see him.
No, I have Stevenson just ahead but there's an argument for Kovalev (see Foreign Soil's post).
What I was really concurring with in bojangles post, was that Kovalev had a better year than Golovkin.
Probably yeah but many casual fans saw more of GGG than they did of Kov.

Kovalev annihilated the guy who dominated Cloud, and annihilated the guy who beat Bellew. Dawson was coming off a weight-drained career ruining beating. If you want to pretend he was still the same Chad Dawson, you can if you want, but it's only because of the Dawson fight that there's any argument about Kovalev and Stevenson.
It's very arguable who had the better year. You can't talk up Stevenson's year and not put Kovalev right up there.
Argument can be made Bellew beat Clev and went on to earn the shot at the WBC title.
Admittedly it wasn't the same Dawson but it was still a massive upset at the time, especially since it was a first round KO, no one would have believed it. And Dawson was still the number one champion in the division.
The mainstream fans have zeroed in on GGG. He is gaining star power and it does not seem to be affected by his quality of opposition. People just tune in to watch him break dudes down.
You can see it happening just before and after he has a fight. He trends on twitter like crazy. There is no recipe for this type of thing. It could be his tyson'esque reputation, his looks, his nickname. Sometimes the fans just find something and attach themselves.
Agreed, how anyone can think he deserves it over Stevenson, Garcia or Rigo is beyond me.
Its not a clear win for anybody this year if you ask me, nobody really had more than one impressive win.
Stevensons best win was Dawson who was knocked out in his last fight, Cloud just lost to Hopkins and should have lost to Campillo, Bellew and Boone aren't that impressive no matter how you look at it.
Garcia gets full credit for beating Matthysse but other than that it was just a tough win over Judah.
Rigondeaux beat Donaire and that was impressive but other than that only beat Agbeko. Agbeko is a good fighter but beating him theses days doesn't make for a great win.
Any of them could win it but I just don't think one really good win makes somebody a lock for fighter of the year, if that's the case you have to throw Maidanas name in there too because not many people saw what he did to Broner coming just like Rigondeaux/Donaire and Matthysse/Garcia.
