Paul said you can't use the shoulder roll without using your legs. Somebody should tell Broner. He's the only guy on Earth who doesn't know.

James Toney used to do the Philly shell without using his legs so it can be done but you need cat like reflexes and not everyone has them

This is true, but James toney lived inside the boxing ring. It's all he did, if he wasn't in a sanctioned fight, he was in the ring sparring.

Toney lived boxing for a long part of his life. The kind of defense toney used has more to do with ring experience than it does reflexes. Same with Floyd. It's the experience of feeling where the punches will come from that gives them the reflexes to block, slide, parry them.

It's the biggest difference between fihters today, and yesterday, guys today don't spar as much, or as consistently. If broner sparred tougher opponents, he would of already known his Philly shell was wack.

I'm glad you mentioned this. It's an important point. Toney had the same type of "sensory sonar" that fighters like Pep, Whitaker and Locche had. It's far more than reflexes. Floyd Mayweather does not - which is why Toney, in my opinion, was arguably a greater defensive fighter than Floyd Mayweather is today. Toney chose to be offensive - we know the rest... Floyd uses his agility, athleticism and overall footspeed to control distance as his primary means of defense against his preferably slower, less agile opposition. He only uses the roll when he absolutely has nothing left.

Mayweather's defense is not solely based on athleticism. That's a myth. It's based on technique more than anything else.
