Serious question... how did Golovkin's popularity rise so fast?

He knocks out everyone he faces. People associate KO's with the person and they associate KO's with excitement. It's like the next Tyson or whatever....to a much lesser extent of course but same principle.Sure he's knocking people out... but only one KO this year had been on HBO, the other being in Monaco. Rosado was just a one sided beat down as well as Stevens. Proksa was last year and a couple of months removed from his Rosado fight
How the hell did he go from the lowest ratings to one of the highest for HBO?
Like somebody said earlier... he doesn't have the same exciting style as Pacquio who's quick and throws flurries. He doesn't have the same ethnic following Canelo has with the Mexicans considering their presence here in the U.S and Mexico being right below the U.S.
He comes forward and beats ass... how the hell did he get so popular so fast? There are plenty of other fighters who come forward and beat ass too and they're not pulling in these kind of numbers.
I don't know how big the Kazakh ethnicity is in the U.S, but unless it's huge, I don't see it being a huge driving force.
How the hell is this happening?
Then you have the HBO sales crew telling everyone watching that he is the most avoided guy in the sport and that he has the highest KO% of all time. When the average Joe happens to tune in on a Sat night because he just so happens to be watching TV instead of going out somewhere, he hears HBO hyping this guy up as a death machine and then he witnesses a KO right before his eyes. It's a product that lives up to it's billing.
One of my buddies who doesn't really follow boxing at all was like "Your boy Martinez gonna man up and face Golovkin?"after Golovkin beat Stevens. Then he tells me that he didn't even see the fight but that he remembered what the HBO commentators said about Golovkin during another fight. He happened to come across an article on ESPN or something the next morning while looking up injury report info for his fantasy football team. Didn't see the fight or anything but formed his opinion based off of HBO commentary.Comment

Like you said though, he's living up to the billing.... For years HBO has been pushing Berto, and Broners down our throats only to have Berto end up sucking and Broner recieving the same hype but against the Gavin Rees' of the world. Golovkin is at least living to live up to it and willing to face anybody.
Anybody who hates that (not you) Golovkin is just a product of HBO hype, they really also hate Canelo, Broner among others. (Ironically they're viewed as legit, though. go figure)Comment

Doesn't Rios have a very fan friendly style too? I remember getting so hype watching him and Urbano Antillon mixing it up and it was action packed all the way.
People don't seem to warm up to him as much though... maybe it's the way he acts.... but people evidently like thatComment
