He is what would happen to a good young fighter if his management acted like alot of you guys were his manager or promoter. He is what GGG will become if they throw him in with Ward too early.

he was a good fighter,,,started fast but the tito fight ruined him, and oscar fight finished the job,,, never the same after those fights,,

he was much better than canelo,,, both were young champs, but vargas would have destroyed guys like old shane, rhodes, hatton, etc,,,,

That is how i knew that canelo was way overhyped,,, he wasnt blowing out guys he should have blown out,,,,

If vargas was around today, he would be the best 154 guy in the world and he would beat the hell out of canelo,,,,

His best win came Vs Winky (IMHO) and maybe Ike Quartey....

he was a two-time world champion

He stepped up Vs Tito, DLH , and Shooga, and got GOT.....

here is a bit more info from wiki

In his professional debut on March 25, 1997, Vargas crushed Jorge Morales in just 56 seconds. Immediately, a star was born. Fernando blasted his next five opponents all within two rounds, eliminating four of his five challengers in one round each. After six professional bouts, Vargas had fought a total of only eight rounds. Vargas racked up an impressive record of 14 victories with 14 KOs against no defeats by the time he fought for his first world championship.

Vargas won his first world title in 1998, knocking out Yori Boy Campas in seven rounds for the IBF light middleweight championship. Vargas successfully defended the title throughout 1999, with victories over Howard Clarke (TKO 4), Raúl Márquez (TKO 11), Winky Wright (MD 12), and Ike Quartey (UD 12).

what is your take on Fern???

Very good skilled fighter who peaked early. The Tito fight started his early downfall.

I would say he was a very good fighter but just short of being a great fighter. He was not lucky at all and he earned everything he got. He was unlucky to run into a truly great fighter in Trinidad when he was so young. He could have avoided Trinidad the way Martinez is avoiding GGG but Vargas was a true brave champion. He gave Trinidad a good fight but he took a terrible beating and he was never as good after the Trinidad fight as he was before the Trinidad fight. Vargas had never been knocked down before the Trinidad fight but he never took hard punches as good after he fought Trinidad. He was still a world class fighter after the Trinidad fight but never as good as he was before. If he had fought Mosley and Oscar before he fought Trinidad I think he might have defeated them.
