For some reason the posters downplaying Chavez' superb defense doesn't surprise me.

Julio Cesar Chavez was one of the slickest boxers ever.

I agree, Chavez may well have been the last great pressure fighter in boxing. He could slip, parry and get under punches against a tonne of very good fighters. His jab was superb too and he was a thinking fighter, which many fail to notice. One of the best moves he had was double jabbing to the head, feinting with the right hand and then landing crushing left hooks to the body.Originally posted by ghns1133 View Postdefense (particularly upperbody movemennt) is wat separates brawlers from pressure fighters(also a good jab).
jcc might have been the last great one
I believe Manny Pacquiao is currently in a similar situation. He has stopped so many great fighters and has such a high punch output that people think of him as some mindless brawler, yet he is more than that. he thinks his way into position and then delivers the needed punch, that is the art of boxing.
I remember talking to my good friend Colin Hart after the Oscar v Chavez fight many years ago and we both admitted that Chavez was no longer the boxer he had once been. He could still hit hard, he still had a great chin and heart but his speed and reflexes had slowed considerably and he was getting hit far more than he had in years. Neither of us spoke of him as a slugger. That tells you a lot about Chavez's skill for those of us who were there to witness it.

The funny thing is, these are the same people who are quick to give Broner the "slick" moniker despite getting tagged at will by guys like Ponce, Rees, Paulie, etc. But they refuse to give the name up to anyone who isn't like them.Originally posted by Fantastic One View PostWhat do you expect, they only see one thing.

As far as I see it's been backed up with examples.Originally posted by Fantastic One View PostFor a guy to be that offensive and still display defense at the same time is the mark of a truly great boxer.
Chavez definitely had a good defense, underrated this day and age, and was very very skilled but his defense simply wasn't great.
His defense was no better than Marquez' or Morales' IMO.

I can't speak for Ruben but I for one would never say Broner has a better defence than Chavez.
Broner I wouldn't describe as Slick either.
