Here's a little something that I just got from the Internet, a part of a Sports Illustrated article..If i have to look someone up,, then obviously they havent lasted the test of time,,, i know who babe ruth, jesse owens, jim thorpe are,,,,,
I dont need to look up hulk hogan,, everyone already knows he slammed andre the giant,,,
But good post,, never heard of her,, thanks for teaching me something, i will look her up
"And she didn't just beat her opponents, she demolished them. They measured their successes against Lenglen in points. A game was a triumph. A set was historic. In 1925, her greatest year as a player, she won the Wimbledon singles title after losing a total of only five games to her seven opponents and the French championship after losing just four. In 1926 her fame transcended not only tennis but also all of sport. In an era of living legends like Babe Ruth, Red Grange, Jack Dempsey, Gertrude Ederle and Bill Tilden, she was the best-known athlete in the world, the one whose private life was hot news and whose personal style was a yardstick by which contemporary sophistication was measured.
In that year, she did what no other tennis player had ever done: She became a playing professional. When she announced her intention, the world was stunned".
I've read other info, including the very long book, "The Goddess and the American Girl" by Larry Engleman, and the above is a very mild partial description of what the hullaballoo was about. A real sports heroine. A combination of fame AND accomplishments.Last edited by edgarg; 10-20-2013, 09:51 PM.Comment

First of all a principle point is, Messi simply IS regarded by many well respected writers, organisations, footballers themselves and more, as one of, if not THE best footballer ever. You can largely, only be as talented an athlete as YOU can. And he is one of the best skilled all round ever.Soccer is not more competitive. For the most part, soccer now is *****y, you can't tackle a player without him acting like you toss a grenade on him. Let me tell you this, it takes passion to get to the next level....watch Ronaldo and Messi's attitude when their team is playing. If they don't have the ball they're out the game. Of course one player can change a game, especially if you are play maker of Messi and Ronaldo's calibre, for all takes is taking over the game and allowing most plays to go through you. It was like when Lebron knows he's best player on the team and refuse to take over the game when his team is losing, trying to pass the burden or just sit back and watch the game goes by, when he knows it takes more players to guard him and, therefore, create unbalance on his opponents' team.
Watch France at world cup, when Zidane took over the games, another player who did this was George Hagi (Romania), Messi needs to step up or he will go down as a "Club baller".
Question: Why you think these players command so much money if they never had the talent to change a game?
If you have a big problem with him being top 3, then you take issue not so much with my point but with the whole way so many in the sport come to rank players differently. There's a consensus out there because it's the majority, and sadly if you disagree you are in the minority whom feel Messi is not and should not indeed be ranked as highly as he factually is.
The game today is different and you have to take that into account when trying to compare. I say try, because it's always going to be somewhat subjective as well as part objective.
It's no coincidence that there's not as many severe stand out heroes in a national team these days. The best players in the world are the best players in the world period, and compete with prior era's best. Does that mean they can pick up national wins and trophies as easily? No. It simply does not. The entire sport, field of different positional players, team dynamic to not rely on one person, club importance and other factors all factor into why Messi, Ronaldo and some others aren't achieving what prior era's national heroes could.
In the 80's for example there was a handful of teams that would have even significant betting odd's of winning a world cup. Compare that with today and it is an entirely different landscape. There's numerous teams with decent enough odd's, there's highly competitve games between top 10 teams, many with some of the best players in the world. It's much more competitive and they can't all win. There's a euro championship every 4 years, and a world cup every 4 years. The trophies and big team performances, wins, are spread wider and thinner in this era.Last edited by Kris Silver; 10-21-2013, 07:15 AM.Comment
