I suggest that you look up Suzanne Lenglen the French tennis star. She was, in her day, for about ten years, more famous in Europe and the US than Jack Dempsey, Bill Tilden and Babe Ruth combined. Several pages in daily newspapers were devoted to her and what she was doing, wearing, drinking, eating etc. And she was no glamour girl by a long way.

She was the first real international sporting icon, got her first tennis racquet aged 10, no coaching except her non-playing elderly father, lost the finals of the French Championship age 14 and even with a 5 year War break, never lost another match (except one through illness and defaulted) for the rest of her career. Won the equivlent of over 30 Grand Slam titles. Then she became the first Pro tennis star. Her history is actually fascinating if you dig into it, and those players who knew her well said that she was far superior to those who came after, like Helen Wills-Moody the 8 time Wimbledon winner.

People never mention Kelly Slater on these kinds of lists, but that guy has been dominating his sport like no other athlete has except for maybe Floyd and B.Hop.

11 World titles, many against kids half his age who weren't even alive when he won his first title. He's the youngest and oldest world title winner.

If you don't think surfing is a sport then you don't know jack about extreme sports or you're using the wrong definition.

I would include Tony Hawk in the popularity category, but Kelly Slater has been dominating the surfing world for a long long time.
