Boxing used to be about compelling matchups because they attracted more mainstream fans and increased ratings.

Now its about star fightrs gettin ratings. IMO it started when tyson fought Mcneely. At that point networks realized as long as you have a star you could put them in against anyone and make a profit.

They don't get behind it for a few reasons. The first is that boxing left network TV to seek more money from pay TV. Before that happened boxing was one of the most viewed sports in the US, but the boxers wanted more money and only the cable networks would pay.

Secondly, the boxers themselves are unreliable. One minuet the network can be promoting and hyping a boxer on their network, next thing you know the boxer decides he's a PPV star and skips off to make some extra cash. In the UK BBC and ITV have also both complained openly of this, they also complain about english boxers leaving to fight in the US, because of the time difference they would be fighting late at night meaning lower TV ratings which won't cover their own losses. Because of this, when Fury fought in the US C5 asked him to fight at a time which would suit them, they also threatened to pull the plug on C5 boxing thinking he was going to jump ship.

Last reason is because networks make money by selling ad space to advertisers boxing is a pretty tough sport to book a space for. Most sports tend to last for a certain amount of time meaning they can always sell ad space. For boxing networks tend to have trouble selling ads for the later rounds, obviously because if the fight ends early it would mean the advertisers just pissed money down the drain. That's why, if you notice, their are rarely any ads during the later rounds for fights. This mainly applies for boxing on network TV in the US and on Sky and C5 in the UK.

Clearly there is a great incentive now with networks trying to pull it back over. Boxing's ratings on NBCS, FS1, NBC and CBS have been great so far, with news that more boxing is on the way. However, because of the ad space problem there will always be less incentive for advertisers to seek this out. We can actually thank Tyson and his early round KOs for networks coming to this realisation.

Somebody has probably already said this, but it's not the networks, it's the fans.

Casual fans don't want to watch snoozers, that's why the likes of Bradley, Ward, and Trout will never do huge numbers (and I like those guys).

Boxing isn't at the point where it can survive on just hardcore fans as there simply isn't enough however there's a lot of casual fans that just want to see people beat the **** out of each other. Until we reach the point where we have enough hardcore fans this will remain the case.

I noticed a fair few brawls under his listings of matchups he held up as examples of non-brawls lol.
