Institutionally, something isn't right at HBO boxing. Their coverage has been poor for a long time, I remember making a thread about this years ago. There's a prevailing sense of negativity and dourness. There's a malaise and directionlessness; a clunkiness to the segues and transitions, an awkwardness to the topics, a lack of excitement and chemistry between the team.

Meanwhile, Showtime's coverage is just awesome and has been for years. Now, they have also got the big names too.

Kellerman just isn't good enough. I loved Merchant but he sorta became part of the problem in terms of creating a negative atmosphere. Lampley still has that great voice but is shot. Roy is great. Honestly, if you swapped HBO's team with Showtime's, the coverage would improve 100%. It really is that basic.

Showtime has been awesome for a long, long time, even before the GBP tie-up.

HBO will do better from now on and that's a fact!!! The next Mayweather fight will not sell well unless its Pacquiao! People pay in the hope Floyd loses and none of the cherry picks have a chance.

I dont know. I feel like HBO just gets up for big fights that they are excited about these days. As much as the fight ****** I'm still amazed that they showed next to no reaction any time Wlad knocked Sasha down. None. Which was the first time I remember the commentators coming off as THAT disinterested. Jim is great but he needs a great fight or big event to get into that zone he has. I've been watching a lot of older fights lately and his enthusiasm is drastically different now. Max is not bad but he is drug down constantly by Roy. They all are. Roy may be worse at his job than Big George was which is saying something. He has a favorite in every fight and never makes any attempt to hide it. Plus he seems to come up with his talking point before the fight even starts and just repeats himself or waits to yell "He's hurt!!! He's hurt bad!!!" Plus Roy just talks down to Jim and Max and seems to go out of his way to disagree with them or talk over them. The chemistry is nonexistent with this HBO crew and I think a lot of the joy is missing because of it. I doubt seriously that it stays Jim, Max and Roy for too much longer. Showtime may look like public access but at least they are all happy to be there come fight night.

Never was a fan of Kellerman, find him annoying and Lampley is just too over the top. Like Roy but he can be biased. I actually like Ward the best of their announcers. Showtime is good, Al and Paulie are exdellent but Mauro is not my cup of tea.
