It's great that we're finally having a discussion about the fight and not what happened after, good stuff guy!

Where do you think it ranks as a welterweight contest? There aren't too many fights in the history of the division better than this.

Only thing I think of that's on that level was PAC v JMM part 4. And it's not better IMO. It had everything.

PAC vs JMM had more drama because of the knockdowns, specially the ending , but the Margarito Cotto fight was all around the better fight IMO ..

Exactly. That fight was amazing, one of the best fights I've ever seen live.

In that he got a comprehensive beating earlier than expected?

In that he was cheated out of his star making performance and he didn't get DLH fight like he was supposed to by plaster

This fight meant a lot because of the circumstances and implications. There were two top caliber fighters looking for welterweight supremacy. If you add the Puerto Rico-Mexico rivalry and the fact that both guys seemed like wrecking machines at the time, you knew you were about to get the type of fight that real men fight.

The fight, in terms of hype, would have to be behind Hearns-Leonard and Trinidad-De La Hoya, but the fight itself is up there with the former and vastly superior than the latter. Marquez-Pacquiao IV was an excellent fight, but both fighters were on a personal quest/revenge, in the sports sense, and the fight was not as significant to the division as this one.
