LOL. That's my point. I was being sarcastic. The post I quoted was foolishness.
What has Cotto done to earn a shot at the middleweight champ? I thought earning a shot was important to you, 2 loses at 154 and beating a fringe guy at 154 earns you a shot at the top guy at 160?

Or is the optional fight alright in this case?
What has Cotto done to earn anything in this sport?
Take on the best fighters for over a decade, put together a hall of fame career and win titles in 3 weight divisions. I'd say he's put in enough work to do whatever the hell he wants to do.

What has he done lately? Reputation doesn't mean much in boxing when talking years.
Also that was kind of my point in the other thread but reversed, the champion had proven them self thus could fight whoever and it not really matter. You made a big deal of that you should make a big deal of this.
For the record if Cotto and Martinez fight that is fine although I would prefer to see them fight at 154 and 160 respectively because that is where they are best and both have things to prove in those classes.
Still it would be a solid enough fight that there is no reason to get twisted over the small stuff.

Reputation is everything. That's why this is a huge fight. Cotto and Martinez are proven veterans who have had great careers and its only right they go head to head in a historic event.
And losing to Floyd Mayweather in the manner he did really isn't a setback. Its not like he went life and death with Julio Diaz.
Now if this was Ishe Smith, K9 Bundrage or some other random lower level 154 pound guy fighting for the lineal MW title, I would have an issue.

He didn't just lose to Mayweather he also lost to Trout and only beat Delvin Rodriguez who is a fringe guy. Trout is alright but he isn't some great fighter.
You made a grand deal out of guys having to earn something, Cotto certainly hasn't earned a shot at the middleweight crown. Historic event? It is a relatively big money fight nothing more.
It is a straight fight, but you are making excuses for it based on the argument we had.

I don't have to excuse anything Miguel Cotto does. The work he put into this sport and what he has accomplished speaks for itself. And it is historic as nobody from his country has ever been a 4 division champion.
But I'm not getting into a back and forth about why I accept Miguel Cotto fighting for a title versus ****in Amir Khan fighting for a title. The fact that we are even putting these two names in the same sentence is ridiculous in itself.

That conversation was about earning something and you were talking specifically about guys coming up having to prove them self first to have a shot at the crown. Which I didn't agree with, as long as the guy coming up had put in work in the division below which is certainly not the case with Cotto at this point he isn't even close to the best at 154. You aren't making excuses for Cotto you are making excuses for you take, and you obviously want to see this fight regardless of what you said last week which is fine you should understand where I was coming from~
They are just both optional fights but for different reasons, I don't have to reconcile anything here you were the one talking about having to earn something. I don't have a problem with this fight at all.

And your ignoring my point. And that's why this conversation is still going on. I said Cotto earned it because of the work he put in throughout his career.
That's it. Khan hasn't accomplished nor put in the work that Cotto has. It's a fact and there is no getting around it.
You said "reputation doesn't matter". I disagree. It does matter because its based on the work you put in. And that's why this fight is acceptable.
Now if this was Canelo instead of Cotto, you may have a point.

Cotto is how many years removed from a quality win?
Reputation in boxing is the most overvalued thing there is because current form is what matters on fight night, what you used to be isn't a sword and shield you can bring in the ring.
Neither Khan nor Cotto have earned anything at 147 or 160, both are optional fights for the champion although Martinez has a lot more pressing challenges at 160 than Floyd does at 147. It is surprising that you don't care about that.
