  • Comments Thread For: Stevenson's Promoter Wants Hopkins, HBO Eyes Kovalev

Yvon Michel, the promoter of WBC light heavyweight champion Adonis Stevenson (22-1, 19 KOs), is trying his best to convince HBO to pick up a unification match with IBF champion Bernard Hopkins (53-6, 32 KOs), who at the end of October will make his mandatory defense against Karo Murat. The problem is that Hopkins is a partner of Golden Boy Promotions and HBO cut ties with Golden Boy earlier this year. Hopkins has been fighting on network rival Showtime.

Everyone wants to see Stevenson fight Kovalev.

    That's the fight at 175.

          I think B-Hop beats Stevenson.

Cloud was not making Stevenson work hard or miss much and Adonis was blowing by the time Cloud crumbled. Hopkins will take that right hand away with movement and distance and be putting money in the bank [bodyshots].

It would be a great way for B-Hop to bow out [cos he ain't gettin' Money May].

Stevenson-Kovalev or Stevenson-Hopkins are both good fights.

Let grandpa B-Hop fight his Karo Mu****.
It's understandable that HBO would like to feed Kovalev to Adonis -- rather than Andre Ward.

Stevenson-Kovalev looks like a good fight with a lot of fireworks. I fancy Stevenson's chances if this happens. Make it happen HBO.

Well, I guess most probably agree, but he is the mando for the WBC belt.

It's a shame that BHop ain't really in the mix 'cos of his GBP ties, although technically HBO have it within their power to work with him, they ain't gonna run the risk of him taking a belt and the lineal off to SHO.

I'm not really understanding why GYM can't take Stevenson off to SHO though, unless Adonis has some HBO contract or there is a longer term agreement/ understanding between either GYM (or his regular Canadian broadcaster) and HBO perhaps?

Either way, whilst Kovalev vs Stevenson is the one that has boxing fans salivating, Bhop is the more established name than either, and could potentially be the bigger draw.

Personally I'm hoping the HBO $s talk and Stevenson - Kovalev gets made, though I can see GYM looking at the Canadian $s to be made first, with Stevenson vs Bute/Pascal, with Kovalev having to feed further down the top 10 - Fonfara, Alvarez, Braehmar or, dare I say it, Sad Chad.

Would like to see Shumenov back in the mix as well, though I don't actually see him lasting long against the new titlists at LHW. Guess he just wants to hang on to that WBA strap as long as he can without actually doing anything (Tamy Kovacs, ffs? Technically unbeaten, but without a single recognisable name on his resume).

Also, on a slightly different topic, but staying at LHW, Artur Beterbiev (Kovalevs amateur nemesis) is with GYM and has fought his first 2 fights on Stevenson's last 2 undercards - if he continues to form (2 stoppages) and fights on the Bellew under then perhaps on the Bute- Pascal under, it won't be long before he's making waves at 175. Certainly a kid to watch out for.

True, but Hopkins brings the money and better exposure. Unfortunately this fight will not happen.

We should forget about B-Hop... Hopkins did enough for this sport -- he must face the fact that he cannot compete anymore with the new top fighters at 175.
I would like to see B-Hop retiring in glory, as a legend...
