It depends how you define 'almost'. He was fairly close on the scorecards, so he definitely had a shot to win it in the later rounds. Danny pulled it out though.

I don't care how the judges scored the fight. I did not have a close fight when it was all said and done. The early rounds were close. That was the only time the fight was close. Matthysse was busier, but he wasn't really landing, and you could see Danny was thinking and waiting for Matthysse to slow down, and he did.

Danny then started to use quick combinations to befuddle and eventually hurt Matthysse. The crowd ooooooo'd and ahhhhhhhhh'd Danny's punches because they were landing clean. Even when Lucas knocked Danny's mouthpiece out in round 11, Danny put Matthysse down in the 11th to seal the deal. Clear win for Danny and no need for a rematch. The rematch is still 50/50-my ass!

Even if you think he lost those fights (both debatable, although I think the Alexander decision was more clear) he was still very competitive. I'm also convinced the main problem against Judah was not being aggressive enough early. In any case, he has always been respectful (from what I've seen) and I think we should respect the effort he puts forth as well as the entertainment he provides us.

I recall Lucas landing some pretty solid shots in the first half, but I haven't had a chance to rewatch it yet. FWIW, you should keep in mind that the compubox numbers showed that Lucas was landing at a 36% rate (where he was also at after 12) after 6, while Danny was landing at 24%. Compubox also had Matthysse landing 22 more shots than Garcia. Garcia was also more busy (not less as you claim) than Matthysse through 6 according to the compubox numbers.

Danny definitely won it at in the last half and I think we all have to respect the adjustments he made. He also has a very good chin. I think a rematch may be warranted down the line depending on how things play out, but I would like to see both fighters move on for the time being.

I'll have to rewatch it as I said before I can properly respond to your points. I agree that Matthysse looked lost after his eye started to swell and Danny didn't seemed to be fazed by his power. It should definitely be a learning experience for him and it looks like Lucas is taking it as that.

I can't speak for others (I respected Danny, but I still thought Matthysse would win), but I think many didn't respect/like Danny before the fight primarily because Angel says some very disrespectful stuff. You also have to take into account that he hasn't won many of his fights in a dominant fashion, so he looked beatable. Danny proved a lot of people wrong and he is continuing to improve, so I expect some big things from him in the future. He should be considered the favorite against most of the fighters in the WW division.
