Now we know the secret of Canelo's rubbish stamina. I run at a faster pace than this for 4 miles no joke. This is not impressive at all. After a 2.5 month break from boxing season I was totally unfit and could run 3:00 literally straight away in the 800m and am now running 2:30 intervals. I weigh about 154 and Canelo is low 70s so he shouldn't be much slower - in fact he should be faster since he is a professional athlete after all. Anthony Joshua has not even had a pro fight yet and on a program in the UK that pits olympic athletes from different sports against each other (not even a serious thing just for fun) Joshua ran 2:26 and he's 17-18 stone and of similar age to Canelo. In all seriousness a professional boxer at that weight should be running 2:20s at worst (in a maximal effort test not intervals).
All access "Canelo's impressive time of 3:00 in the 800" wth.

Well if this is anything like what I used to do, it's not bad at all. And I heard that he did it 6 or more times.
Those aren't bad times.
You start off and try to beat your initial time each time with a minute or two rest..... and he did look to beat it each time getting to 3:00 by then.
IMO, that's hard.... that's a big endurance thing and kills the legs. -
Alvarez always amazed me with his handspeed. He's clearly nonathletic yet his hands are fast.
stamina is terrible
foot speed is slow
but his combos go flyingComment

I'm a Varsity boxer in the UK and every man who makes the 9 man squad for the Varsity match runs 6-8 800m intervals (with an extremely slow jogging rest of about 2 min) at sub-3 min, with quite a lot of guys running the intervals at 2:45 or less. The top guy was running every interval at less than 2:30. These people aren't pro boxers. Like I said, if 18 stone Joshua can run a 2:26 then Canelo should be able to run intervals at a better pace than he does.Well if this is anything like what I used to do, it's not bad at all. So that is roughly a 6 minute mile?
I am dead unfit at the moment and run 5K in less than 25 minutes.
He can't be putting much into that.Comment

I still think it's good, and for a guy with shit stamina, should be a personal win.I'm a Varsity boxer in the UK and every man who makes the 9 man squad for the Varsity match runs 6-8 800m intervals (with an extremely slow jogging rest of about 2 min) at sub-3 min, with quite a lot of guys running the intervals at 2:45 or less. Yeah I lol'd too, that's shocking.. I'm not sure if they were being sarcastic or what..?? I know boxing ain't got shít to do with running times, but I would have expected someone at the elite level of such a physically demanding sport to be able to run 800m faster than me... I do 800 in 2:50 with ease..
Maybe he's just not built for running??Comment

Floyd knows this and is focusing heavily on bodyshots in trainingComment

Exactly. I ran 3.635 miles (very specific I know) in just over 21 min (PB), which equates to about 5 min 47s a mile when I was 17. I've not broke this yet (I'm now 19 and a lot heavier but had a year out through leg injury). Will break it this year I'm sure. This is a very hilly route also. People can say it's intervals not a PB all they want but the fact that I can run faster than his pace for miles without rest as a non-professional athlete is pretty telling. I'm not a runner either - never competed in my life and only do it as a way of training for boxing.Last edited by stefl14; 09-08-2013, 05:02 AM.Comment

I wonder if this is something indicative of a lot of top boxers.
There is an interview with Ashley Theophane and he acknowledges that the sparring he gets in America is better than he gets at home but he says that British fighters tend to be better conditioned. I thought that was interesting.Comment
