Dawson was such a hype job

Never was high on Dawson; he had skill set, the height/ reach and boxer's physique but he seemed to lack the mental toughness and 'killer instinct' to elevate himself to the next level.
I thought his fights were boring and to some degree I'm glad he's not really in the lhw mix anymore.

Adamek, Glenn Johnson, Hopkins, Tarver wins make you a hype. Joe Calzaghe didnt even have the balls to fight Dawson or Johnson and cherry picked Hopkins past prime
Posted from Boxingscene.com App for AndroidCherry picked the legitimate champion a weightclass above yourself. I've heard it all now.
Who was it that said?: "I'll never let a white boy beat me!". Joe clearly cherry picked that one.

He's an impressive boxer, but yes he was too quickly hyped as is often the case of some bright American stars (there I said it). An unpopular opinion but Lacy, Pavlik, Dawson...all were quickly often heralded as the kings of their division after just a few impressive wins. It was premature.
Dawson's a rangey awkward southpaw whom is a good technical boxer. He was suited against the older crop of LHW's whom had mostly just been beating up on a past it RJJ to get so hyped themselves.
Sorry that's just how I see it. He'd have been a tough tough fight for Joe but I'd have him losing, and he's been exposed in slightly different ways, a few times already now.
Great shame but that's how it is. I'd like him to get a win over say, Cloud though. He's still a top boxer.

Dawson buckled under the pressure against Jean "I fight for 30 seconds every round" Pascal.
God lord, imagine Calzaghe unloading 1000 punches on this guy's face. He'd look like a deer in the headlights.

extremely talented athlete who lacked the mentality of a top flight boxer. he should have gone to Uconn and played basketball.
still, he got some good wins, won some championships, and made a lot of money. he fought a lot of guys.
calzaghe and hopkins avoided him in '08 as well. i don't really blame them, given his billing at the time, but the fights were considered to be the best in the division, and dawson and shaw would have surely taken them.

gary shaw would have taken that fight for dawson for six dollars fifty and a can of diet coke. i'd say that he'd do it for a tank of gas [petrol to you limeys,] but i know for certain that shaw drives a prius.
calzaghe, being terrified of dawson's youth and size, retired.
only hopkins and zaghe fanboys watched that fight in '08 without thinking "so that's why these two don't fight chad dawson." they looked like old men.
that was the fight where hopkins kept going to the wrong corner, if memory serves right. zaghe's best moves involved hip gyrations in bernard's direction.
i actually think that dawson would be enough of an idiot to pull his usual BS and get outworked by zaghe in '08, but it was clear that calzaghe's people did not want the fight. poopkins people waited until they thought dawson had slowed down as well, but that's more of a matter of dawson's style being all wrong for an aging hopkins. dawson still beat him, and he should have done it twice. hopkins clearly looked for a way out in the first fight.
the only real roadblock was american network TV, as dawson was a showtime fighter at that point, and somebody they were really trying to push.
