I have sparred many pros in my career and even now once in a while in the ring and the one's that people would call "bums" would beat the **** out of 90% of most people.

I sparred Edvan Barros about a year ago, and he ran circles around me.
I actually met him at my friend's church when I was working in Boca about, five years back. He's a really nice guy... first thing he asked me when we met was if I'd boxed and at the time, I had no idea who he was haha [so that was cool]. Then we just started talking boxing before he went in for the 11 o'clock service.

Told me about how he fought Collazo and said he was a slick boxer but couldn't punch at all, hahaha.

Well, I want to share an experience that I had sparring with a guy who fought as a pro and whose career record was 13-27. He's a great guy too so I won't mention his name to embarrass him. As a matter of fact by creating this thread I am embarrassing myself to all those armchair experts who think they can do it better than the pro fighters.

So just a little info about me. I started training boxing when I was 14 and I trained for a year. I was about average. When I was 15 I injured my back and had to give up the sport. I was in rehabilitation for 2 years and then decided to come back when I was 17, I trained for 5,6 months and I believe I was a little better than before but had to quit, moved to North America.

So at age of 21 weighing roughly 135 pounds at 5 7 I joined a boxing studio at a fitness gym and after a couple of months I asked the trainer, the pro fighter in question, "the tomato can" to spar me. He was about 5 9, a southpaw and a little heavier than me. He took it easy on me but I got overconfident and decided to open up. I landed a few good hard shots then he got upset he tried to get me back. He couldn't at first then he slowed me down with a few precise body shots and he pretty much teed off on me. He wasn't a heavy puncher, but I just received too many punches period to the point where I was getting angrier and angrier wanting to kill him, but then decided that will make it only worse so I took a knee.

So the moral of the story is actually kinda funny. I'm a boxing fan and I talk a lot about boxing. So I've sparred a few guys bigger and stronger but without much or any boxing experience. Sometimes the sparring sessions have been close at other times I've beat up guys boxing who would outweigh me by as much as 85 pounds. So all these guys thought they would be better than me just because of size, they weren't but it's a lot of these same guys that would talk crap about pro boxers and fighters at featherweight. I mean I got beat up by a "tomato can" who campaigned at 135 and 140. It's just so ridiculous the ego that some people have.

Anybody else shared the ring with a pro fighter who was good or bad and how you fared?
First time I've seen you post; but this gives me instant respect. Props.

Barros and I are really good friends. He is very religious too which is funny because I'm an Atheist and he is constantly telling me about god and how much he loves me.

He's a really good person, I care for him a lot and there are things I can't mention about his family and the trouble he's had in the last few years. Lets just put it this way, he's had a rough time as of late.

I trained as a little kid in a boxing gym that was in my neighborhood. Sparred a lot with kids from other gyms. I would never call anyone who gets into as boxing ring and fight a bum. I have nothing but the up most respect for anyone who has got into a fighting ring. That being said, I remember watching professional fighters work out in the gym, you know hit the bags, spar, shadow box and other stuff, I was amazed at how fast and good even the professional "BUMS" looked. I mean they looked like machines. They did stuff that no regular person could do. So yeah a so called professional "BUM" would definitely hurt a regular person bad. Casual boxing fans should think gain before they call professional fighter bums.

What about former fighters using bum? I used to fight and ****** with smw champs and I use bum when I see fit. The bottom of the pro-pile can be called bums, its whats done. Doesn't mean they are a real life bum pissing in a pickle jar. 13-27 is a bum in the pro ranks. I don't see any problem with it. You don't have to fight to know what a bum in boxing is.

I was a Golden Glove boxer, I beat the Canadian Amateur champ when I was 16 (he was 26) The first fight he beat me, the second fight I wore head gear and beat him. ( yes I'm old and those were the days of optional headgear).

Anyway, I always thought I would turn pro and do well enough to become a local hero.

At age 18 I started training with some low level pro boxers, shortly after that I quit boxing and went to college.

The Pro's hit too damn hard for me, the damage is too much for a guy that wants to have his brains in tact. Pro fighters are the bravest, toughest human beings you will ever meet period. I don't care what a guys record is, if he fights pro, you better respect his ass, because he is willing to fight to the death.

Hahaha. That's the great thing about being open-minded, I'm glad you guys can accept each others standing. Hopefully everything will get better for he and his family. In just the little time I got to speak with him, he's a genuine person.
