That is a big question without an easy answer. Probably, the two biggest reasons are: 1) This is a U.S. based website with a majority of U.S. commentors. Joe is a VERY white Welshman. Because he never danced into the ring waving the stars and stripes, we recognize him as something other than "homegrown". We Americans are just learning to open our eyes and look at fighters outside of our national boundaries.

and 2) It's simply the culture of the forums here. Most of us will rag on a fighter that we might have no enmity toward. We may even jest at a fighter we truly like. We do it because there is already 60 people doing the same thing and giving us a laugh. So we jump on the train. A few people, long ago, decided not to give Joe Calzaghe the respect someone with his career deserves and it just persisted.

Now I'm as American as anyone could be. I'm a southern born, pistol toating, conservative. I like my steaks medium rare and I think tree hugging ******** are giant twats. But I recognize that Calzaghe makes a short list of All Time Greats.

How anyone who can hold Amir Khan in such high regard and criticise Joe Calzaghe is laughable!

Robin Reid, Byron Mitchell and Charles Brewer were all robbed in Germany against Sven Ottke.

Joe came up the easy way for the most part, was brought along slowly, grabbed the title by beating a washed-up Eubank, and didn't take too many chances in his career, and then, after years of being derided as a duck, a coward, an impostor, etc. he went over to American and beat Hopkins and Jones, two guys fans had been claiming for years that he was afraid and be destroyed by.

They just can't let it go. Roy and Bernard were past it by that point, but the fact that he beat them still drives a lot of fans crazy, they can't accept it. Joe was a really good fighter and came out clean. Haters gonna hate.

What an amazing post. I share the same thought on this. The bold part is why it's hard for boxers from around the world to get equal credit most of the times.

                    Simple.

A Brit who toyed with American heroes. To this day people still refuse to acknowledge him beating a prime BHOP. Calzaghe is a God damn legend.

All ranked contenders, too. Nothing spectacular, obviously - but that's pretty much the level of opposition that Hopkins was defending his title(s) against. Hopkins real legacy began after he moved up from 160, if we're being honest.
