    whats the deal then?
Daring to guess, I'd say it was that annoying (yet effective) Slapsy Maxy Rosenbloom style of his.

I agree that his awkward style has everything to do with the hate he gets.

I dont really understand it tho. He fights more like Martinez than Mccloskey. Ye he doesn't have power but he was almost impossible to hit clean.

Verdict: Joe Calzaghe was a good but not great fighter. It must be said that Calzaghe’s reluctance to take on the elite names will always reflect badly on his career. In an article at thisislondon.co.uk, Calzaghe talked about the prospect of facing a prime Roy Jones Jr. Calzaghe said “I could probably give Jones a tough fight, probably the best fight he’s ever had, but I know my capabilities and unless I got paid the crown ***els I wouldn’t want to risk it’’. And that was the problem, Team Calzaghe knew their capabilities and they did not want to risk it

That looks like a good article. Who is he? And is there a link to it?

Calzaghe was a good fighter, I’ll agree to that, but he was more in the Ottke class than in the class of Sugar Ray Robinson, Ali, Louis, Chavez Snr (or Bernard Hopkins himself).

His record boasts the names of Roy Jones and Bernard Hopkins and he has remained undefeated for 18 years, but lets put these victories into perspective.

Roy Jones is a great victory, but Jones had been a shot fighter for almost 5 years at the time of the fight. He was 39 and wasn't even ranked in the top 5 of a rubbish division.

Hopkins would have been an extremely credible opponent when he was the linear middleweight champion, but the fight happened in 2008. Hopkins is still good enough to win a title, I know, but let's not act as if he was in his 30's when he fought Joe. He was 43.

Surely a good fighter, but not great.

              .
Hopkins turned down a $3m purse to fight Calzaghe when he was linear middleweight champion.

Calzaghe beat Hopkins when he was linear light-heavyweight champion.

Sorry, I thought the one embedded in my post worked. It doesn't. Try googling "Joe Calzaghe Measured Against All-Time".

I'm not here to bash on Calzaghe,

I don't care about boxing politics, or how much Hopkins deserved/expected to be paid. I honestly have no idea. I'd probably consider to fight Wladimir Klitschko for that kind of money

That said, Calzaghe did not fight that version of Hopkins, he cannot be given credit for something he did not do, whatever the reason.

Calzaghe beat Hopkins when he was 43, and it was a close decision. That is what I give him credit for.
