I don't remember people really hating Calzaghe until he got the W over Hopkins. That was the turning point, I think. The Executioner has a pretty big fanbase. It was a close and controversial fight without any satisfying conclusion. Both Bhop and Joe spilled a lot of bad words before and after the fight, and the beef never really ended.

So of course the public wanted to see a rematch between Calzaghe and Hopkins. Instead, Joe targeted another hero of the boxing world, a faded RJJ. So finally the RJJ fans turned against him too.

At this point in time Johnson, Dawson and Froch were also calling out Joe. Many fans criticized Joe for retirement not because they disliked him as a fighter, but as a way to get him to fight again. Fans were hoping Joe would try to "shut them up" by rematching Hopkins and beating some of the young guys who went on to compete in the Super Six.

I think the hate started as an attempt to get Joe back in the ring, and after that just turned into contempt for his claim that he was the best without fighting the Super Six guys.

Calzaghe is a top 50 ATG, no question!
They try to forget that part when it comes to the JC discussion.

        They always do.

But on another thread will use this argument to big up B-Hop.

The proposition of Calzaghe as an all-time great should be deemed an indictment for Fraud. This English-born, half-Italian - half-Welsh CHARLATAN led a completely manufactured career. His bogus hometown slap-stoppages were atrocious which can be seen, and exposed of, on YouTube.

It took this crook NINE years to unify, and in his ''reign'', he boxed FIVE top-10 contenders. His promoter, Frank Warren, a leaching gangster with odious ties to the WBO ensured Calzaghe could get away with the most repulsive of contenders, often fighting top-50 WBO mickey mouse contenders.

Calzaghe has a few decent wins. But his style was terrible and he was a compulsive cherry picker.

IF Calzaghe is great, then by the same analogy we can say Sven Ottke and Dariusz Michalczewski are legends.

          Pathetic.

Calzaghe was horrible to watch. So what? I'd pass up some of his fights but I still wouldn't be such a **** to denie his clear wins (kessler, B-hop) and say he crap. Ye he fought limited competition so did Ricky Hatton for years. the difference between the two is Joe won when he stepped up.

People act like Calzaghe vs Ward Prime 4 prime is a forgone conclusion. Id be happy to debate otherwise.

I agree with this summary by Sam Singh of Boxing News 24: (To me the part I've made bold says it all. End of story, pretty much.)

Verdict: Joe Calzaghe was a good but not great fighter. It must be said that Calzaghe’s reluctance to take on the elite names will always reflect badly on his career. In an article at thisislondon.co.uk, Calzaghe talked about the prospect of facing a prime Roy Jones Jr. Calzaghe said “I could probably give Jones a tough fight, probably the best fight he’s ever had, but I know my capabilities and unless I got paid the crown ***els I wouldn’t want to risk it’’. And that was the problem, Team Calzaghe knew their capabilities and they did not want to risk it

Did JC do your Mrs by any chance?

Ottke has no one anywhere near the level of Kessler, B-Hop, Jones or Eubank on his résumé!

One of whom Joe Calzaghe himself wasn't worth fighting because he'd (Roy Jones Jr) been knocked out too many times, in written word in his own biography. He actually then bragged about beating Jones up at an evening event I went to.

I respect Calzaghe's skills and toughness but his career suffers the same Warren management Hatton's did. Spending too much tine in relative obscurity facing guys like Pudwill and Mgrtchian, while Clinton Woods at least went for Jones Jr nearer his prime. Allowing Ottke to exist while defending the Warren Boxing Organisation belt shouldn't have happened.

Great fighter that should've told Warren to shove it sooner.

I think he said IF, not 'for sure'.

but I agree to an extent theres no need to belittle someone with some great boxing attributes. Sven had none (except a great ref as his drinking buddy) - though I am not denying Zaghes had 'drinking buddy' refs too, just not to the same extent.
