Rigondeaux has shown incredible ability and potential so early in his pro career. However, he's thirty-two years of age, and if he falls into the pit of only fighting twice a year, he's going to go down in history as a footnote- a guy like Donald Curry.
Rigondeaux will never be an ATG unless he gets off the "Fight every six months" train

Yeah! He's gotta beat a Top 5 P4P guy and become the universally recognized Champion of a weight class! All joking aside I think it's clear that Rigondeaux has definitely done something with his career. You can argue the specifics of what something consists of but I think Rigondeaux's pro career covers it.
I'm happy with him fighting every 6 months if they are always against a very high caliber of opponent.
Rigo is an older fighter but people age differently and he has been subject to different circumstances, so there may be a bit more left in the tank for him than people might think.Comment

He was supposed to fight 4 times last year but the Poonsawat fight fell through so he only fought three.
This year he fought Donaire who was a top 3 pound for pound guy that outweighed him by 15-20 pounds on fight night. That takes a toll on your body so I don't think 2 fights this year is a bad thing.
I expect him to be more active if the issues with his promoter and network can get fixed.Comment

I don't see Buster Douglas in the Hall of Fame for knocking out Mike Tyson. Rigo needs a lot more fights than a possible "One Hit" wonder of a fight against Donaire to be considered an ATG. The TS might have a point.Yeah! He's gotta beat a Top 5 P4P guy and become the universally recognized Champion of a weight class! Rigondeaux could still get 5 fights in at least if he fought once every 6 months. Tyson is the only impressive result on Douglas' resume. I'm hoping that Rigondeaux will systematically defeat the remaining best of 122. This gives him the dominance and shows that he can fight at the top level for more than one fight. Hopefully he can move up or CW a fight with a big name at the Featherweight too. However he should definitely be a HOF'er by the time his career is over.
Providing Rigondeaux retired today I would completely understand your point. It will also hurt him if he's not willing to move a little weight in order to meet the best opponents. Time will tell. I'm not saying he will ever be a surefire ATG and I do agree with the TS' view. My post was mainly directed at the person I quoted.Last edited by Barn; 08-28-2013, 10:07 AM.Comment
