  • Bob Arum claimed Oscar took a dive against Hopkins

Arum accused Oscar of taking a dive against Hopkins. Erik Morales also said Oscar took a dive. I do remember back then when the fight was over many people thought that the whole fight was a big farce and that Oscar took a dive. Even today when I talk about that fight with people lots of fans still have doubts over that fight.

I mean a precise body shot to the liver and you'll go down no matter how tough you are....but was Oscar in pain or did he take a dive?

He was down by 6 points on one scorecard and 4 on another with 3 rounds to go.

He couldn't of won the fight on points regardless. Why would he take a dive? So Hopkins can have a KO over him or because he quit?

I don't think he did, but he was he had enough energy to slam his glove into the canvas.

I always felt he did but then again I feel like Clottey threw the fight with Manny and that Likar Ramos-JMM fight was a farce as well. Ortiz-Mayweather looked a little too wwe'ish to me as well but eh

Honestly, I think De La Hoya just saw a way out of a fight he was clearly losing and decided to take it. Hopkins signing to 'Golden Boy Promotions' less than 2 months later certainly didn't help quell the rumors of a dive, though.

Barker just went through the same thing but he was able to get up. Maidana was able toget up too. Virgil Hill and Oscar not so lucky. Liver shots hurt. Bob just mad GBP causing TR to float off into the Don King realm.

            Anyway Clottey anyone

yes i totally have the same thoughts as you....

plus hopkins became a partner in GBP a few days after the fight,,,

ANd the whole fight looked like a sparring session, and then hopkins in his corner saying "this is my round" and then oscar goes down to the body shot...

We will never know, but my gut feeling is if it wasnt a dive, then it was oscar looking for a way out,

It was actually something like 2 months after when it was officially confirmed, but rumors about the signing started circulating within a week or two of the result. Hopkins fought De La Hoya in September of 2004, and the official press release stating that Hopkins had signed with GBP came out in November.
