"the objective of boxing is to hit and not get hit"

Stop it already. Its not. The objective is to win. All this crap about sweet science this and that is nice and all but its not all there is to boxing. Boxing is about using your preferred style to triumph over your opponent and his style. Saying "boxing's objective is to hit and not be hit " doesn't make you look smarter or knowledgeable.

It does make you a better boxer 9 times out of 10 though.

The best example is Whitaker vs Chavez. He embarrassed the best opposition-minded fighter on the planet using the Sweet Science.

There's no such thing as 'the sweet science', it's an overused and empty cliche.

And how do you win if you're getting hit constantly without hitting the other guy?

You can get hit and hit the other guy you know, the two aren't mutually exclusive.

In fact, this is the reality of almost every boxing match, both fighters get hit.

UM ok? Anybody who has ever boxed and does not try not to get hit will have a very short career, Tough guys normally don't last long in this sport and if they do they usually don't remember anything, not even their names.

The whole point is to get hit less than the other guy though. I'm not going into a fight thinking "can't wait til he punches me in the face, just what I was hoping for!" It's called a science for a reason. Everything should be meticulous and calculated. Not reckless and savage. Boxing, when done right, is graceful. It's pretty much an art form.

When you learn how to box, you (should at least) learn that every move you make effects all your possibilities in terms of landing punches and punches landed on you. A lot can happen in just 30 seconds. A few inches in any direction can be life or death.

Yeah boxing can be about winning but how do you win if you take out KO's and force? Points right? Isn't that what separates this as a sport from just regular street fighting? Rules and objectives? With that in mind, "Hit and not get hit" makes perfect sense. Complete domination of a fighter.

It has worked out ok for Randall Bailey.

                  The objective is to win.

And hitting + not getting hit is the easiest way to win.

                  Duh.

Whitaker was an athletic freak of nature though. That style was best for him. Do you think Chavez Sr. should have tried to be a defensive wizard? You gotta know what you're capable of and what you're strenghts and weaknesses are. If being a pressure fighter is your strength, then embrace it. Not everyone has the ability or skillset to fight like a Whitaker or a Mayweather etc.
