Exactly, well said. I Have Hopkins and Golovkin in my avy and sig, two totally different styles yet I love watching both of them. I love watching the skills and smarts of Rigondeaux, Hopkins and Floyd and love watching the brutality of Golovkin and Matthyse. And there is SKILL in what Golovkin and Matthysse do, some people don't get that it takes an awful lot of skill and intelligence to effectively cut off the ring and set up shots.Comment

This thread should have ended right here.
Can't believe someone is actually suggesting a "hit and get hit" method of victory.
"Let us just take turns punching each other, and see who falls first, shall we?"
"Hit and not get hit" seems like a MUCH more sound plan for victory.
It's boxing. Not punching. Go watch Toughman or some shit.Comment

Yeah, I think what makes a fighter entertaining is his mastery of his chosen style. It's usually the guys that are poor examples of a particular style that bore me...bad fighters, in general. A top-notch fighter, regardless of approach, tends to keep me interested. Pure boxers don't "run," although their detractors claim they do. They move laterally; they make you miss; they use footwork, etc. The brawlers aren't always the mindless plodders some make them out to be. Roberto Duran was one of the most skilled fighters we've ever seen.
it's all about preference and whatever style you prefer, it doesn't make you less of a fan. there's just some idiots who like to think that if you don't like their preferred style you're not a boxing fan or you don't know anything about boxing. as if there's anything really so complicated about boxing from a fans perspective.Comment

He's not suggesting that as a method though, at least I didn't read it like that. But there are some fighters who have the ability to take punches better than others. As I said before, boxing is about making your style work for you better than your opponent can. Everyone can't be a hit and make you miss fighter. Everyone comes to the ring with different attributes. You can't make Margarito a technical boxer because he's too slow. You can't make Malignaggi a brawler because he lacks power. Naturally every fighter wants to get hit the least amount of times as possible but its entirely false to say "boxing is about hitting and not getting hit". Boxing is about beating the man whose trying to beat you. No style is guaranteed to win over the other. Or else everyone would be trying the same style.Comment

Stop it already. Its not. The objective is to win. All this crap about sweet science this and that is nice and all but its not all there is to boxing. Boxing is about using your preferred style to triumph over your opponent and his style. Saying "boxing's objective is to hit and not be hit " doesn't make you look smarter or knowledgeable.Comment

People are missing the point here. The point as that people use phrases like "the sweet science" and "hit and don't get hit" to justify being fans of boring fighters like Rigondeaux. The fact of the matter as that these boring fighters could still outscore their opponents by large margins if they threw more and got hit a few more times - in fact they would often be more dominant. Unfortunately fighters like Rigondeaux (a lot of it due to too long in the amateurs) don't pull the trigger even when there is barely any risk associated with throwing just a little more. The fact is that trying to land more punches at the risk of taking a few more is the best strategy in so many cases. It's not that fighters try to get hit, it's that they are willing to risk taking a few to land their own. Anyone who doesn't understand this doesn't get boxing. Not everybody can be a pure boxer. Please note that I'm saying all this as a pure boxer with around 50 bouts. Some of my toughest fights have been against fighters who are willing to take some punches to land their own - brawlers. Everybody could take less but sometimes that's not the best strategy - I think I'm well placed to say this given that half of the people who talk about the "sweet science" have never boxed.Last edited by stefl14; 07-25-2013, 02:01 PM.Comment

You can get hit 1000 times, miss 999 punches, and win by landing your 1000th punch.
Like OP said, the point of boxing is to win...however you do it.Comment
