Comments Thread For: No Real Controversy in Dereck Chisora’s Knockout Win

Every boxing fan remembers the climax of Rocky II, Sylvester Stallone’s epic ode to boxing, due to the dramatic nature of the movie’s meeting between fictional world heavyweight champion Apollo Creed and Rocky Balboa. Behind on points and needing a KO to win, Rocky drops his man heavily then collapses to the floor himself due to sheer exhaustion. As the referee counts, both men struggle to their feet and it is Rocky who clambers up as the count rolls on through nine to 10 and out. And there you have it — the underdog prevails in dramatic fashion.

Lee Roy Murphy vs Chisanda Mutti is best than Rocky II.

Great article. The majority of refs will stop any fighter that stays down until 9, staying down so long makes the fighter look unable/unwilling to continue.

If Dereck Chisora had risen at the count of 9, would the ref have waved it off?

British refs are the worst in the world, and I'm English.

Am I wrong; doesn't the Rule say that the downed fighter has 10 seconds to rise to his feet..... And as I recall-admittedly a long time ago- when I was a kid and being a boxer i was often at ringside and many a time i heard the referee Lugs Brannigan (well known to all Irishmen and National Stadium attendees of those days) count 9....10... and OUT.

            Things have changed.

as boxing fans we wait 20 minutes for the ring walks, national anthems, intros etc...but we can't wait 1 second for the ref to reach 10? he has to stop the fight at 9 in order to save time? just count to 10 fu-ckface and if he's not up then the fight is over. if he is up then analyze the situation and either let him continue or stop it if he can't continue.

The wave is 10, doesn't matter if the ref says 10 or waves the fight is still over.

                    No controversy....

Other than the fact he was up before 10.
