New Rivalry? Cuba vs Mexico

I have my theories about some of this. As with all theories, there are holes. I do believe, however, that the whole communist experience caused a rift we may not see healed in our lifetimes. The few Cubans in the US are distant from the island in both birth and culture. Guys like Rigo and Lara aren't viewed by most Cubans as "one of us." It's tough to get behind someone you don't relate to quite enough. If Cuba becomes a democracy (who knows when that'll happen?), I can see the islanders going nuts for their native sons. Until that day, there won't be any backing to speak of from US-Cubans.
It's the reason Cubans-Americans have the highest rate of assimilation among latinos.
The son's of Island Born Cubans simply have no relationship to the island or it's people. Makes it harder to relate to them.
BTW love the Jose Marti pic you have.Comment

You're right. The distance that Cuban-Americans have with the island due to the blockade is huge.

I train under a North Philly trainer and he uses that word a lot. It's funny.

Naw man, I live in Miami man and the fans suck. The Marlins have won 2 world series and didn't sell out. They talk about it all the time on sports talk radio. When they were proposing the new stadium, people would say "whats the difference, nobody is going to show up to the games". They even blamed it on the hot weather and that it didn't have a roof, now it has a roof and people are still not showing.Comment

I mean, ask a Cubs fan if he would take that in the last 100 years. I'm just surprised it's not a baseball town, considering Cubans are such great baseball players.
Go to Chicago, NY or STL on a weekday at 1pm and it's sold out. You don't see that here. The Heat are selling because they are good, outside of that they don't care either.
This is most definitely a football town though, that is true.Comment

Dolphins are king down here, used to be the Hurricanes. I don't know why the Marlins fans use that as an excuse because they have delivered 2 titles to S. Fla.

Maybe the Cubans down there rather spend their money on their palomas y palomeo than go watch the Marlins.Comment
