I have my theories about some of this. As with all theories, there are holes. I do believe, however, that the whole communist experience caused a rift we may not see healed in our lifetimes. The few Cubans in the US are distant from the island in both birth and culture. Guys like Rigo and Lara aren't viewed by most Cubans as "one of us." It's tough to get behind someone you don't relate to quite enough. If Cuba becomes a democracy (who knows when that'll happen?), I can see the islanders going nuts for their native sons. Until that day, there won't be any backing to speak of from US-Cubans.
You're right. The distance that Cuban-Americans have with the island due to the blockade is huge.
It's the reason Cubans-Americans have the highest rate of assimilation among latinos.
The son's of Island Born Cubans simply have no relationship to the island or it's people. Makes it harder to relate to them.

BTW love the Jose Marti pic you have.
I don't know if you follow baseball at all. Manny Ramirez, Alex Rodriguez and Pedro Alvarez all hail from the same NYC neighborhood as I -- Washington Heights. Hell, so does hall-of-famer Rod Carew. I'm obviously aware of all this, I think it's cool, but it doesn't make me a fan of any of them. It's like, "Cool, they're from my 'hood. Next!" I think it's similar with most US-Cubans. There's a connection, but way too distant to move a muscle.
Thats exactly how I meant it. It made sense to me and it was the first word that came to mind. Idk why lol. I said it just to talk some smack. Didnt think anyone would take it like you did.
It's a boxing thing man, in boxing gyms, that's the worst thing you can call a fighter. A mutt is like a heartless bum, a half breed mangy dog that nobody respects.
I train under a North Philly trainer and he uses that word a lot. It's funny.

This may have something to do with it, another maybe that there's tons of **** to do in Miami. I mean, in Nebraska you go watch the Cornhuskers and that's it, in Miami there's 13,000 things to do every day.
Its not just Cubans. Im assuming youre talking about the Marlins? When a team is losing nobody wants to go watch. Its like that for every fanbase/sport. Jaguars are one good example. They were giving out free beer just to get butt on the seats.
Naw man, I live in Miami man and the fans suck. The Marlins have won 2 world series and didn't sell out. They talk about it all the time on sports talk radio. When they were proposing the new stadium, people would say "whats the difference, nobody is going to show up to the games". They even blamed it on the hot weather and that it didn't have a roof, now it has a roof and people are still not showing.

Do you think part of it is retaliation towards the dude down there who gets the talent only to trade them away? Last year watching the Dolphins games, the attendance didnt look bad. Considering it was the Dolphins...

Dolphins are king down here, used to be the Hurricanes. I don't know why the Marlins fans use that as an excuse because they have delivered 2 titles to S. Fla.
I mean, ask a Cubs fan if he would take that in the last 100 years. I'm just surprised it's not a baseball town, considering Cubans are such great baseball players.
Go to Chicago, NY or STL on a weekday at 1pm and it's sold out. You don't see that here. The Heat are selling because they are good, outside of that they don't care either.
This is most definitely a football town though, that is true.

I've heard the term used both ways. The definition depends on the context in which it's used.

That's part of it. Miami is a buzzing town. Lots of distractions.

Which leads to this ^. Miami sports fans are relatively disinterested...and not everyone in that town is Cuban.

Hmmm I'm not sure. Thers a lot of things that can play a factor in this situation.
Maybe the Cubans down there rather spend their money on their palomas y palomeo than go watch the Marlins.

The south is about football, no doubt. Believe it or not, lots of Cubans are Yankee fans. I don't know why that is, but it's true. In any event, it's mind-boggling to me that Jose Fernandez, a Cuban-born superstar pitcher, could only muster about 20,000 fans to Marlins Park (about double the usual attendance). Miami fans just don't care.
Let's see what the Barthelemy-Mendez fight at Miami Beach looks like. You going, bro?
