Comments Thread For: Freddie Roach on Training Miguel Cotto in Return

Miguel Cotto announced last week via Twitter that he would be returning October 5th to both HBO airwaves and with Top Rank for his next fight. He also revealed he would have renowned trainer Freddie Roach in his corner which meant former trainer Pedro Diaz who trained him for his last two fights was out the door.

BoxingScene caught up with Freddie Roach at the Wild Card Gym in Hollywood, CA to get his thoughts regarding working with Cotto. Roach is familiar with Cotto to a degree as they were on opposite corners when Manny Pacquaio defeated Cotto in 2009 by a 12th round stoppage. While it’s almost a certainty Roach will be working with Cotto, he said things are not completely finalized yet.

Cotto is definitely a slut but I actually like freddy as his trainer only because be can try to make Cotto tbe offensive minded pressure guy he was pre Jennings fight, but It has to be at 147 imo

This is what cotto really needs, a trainer like roach, he is gonna make him work hard, he wont have to fight 154 couse by training hard, is gonna allow him to drop to 147 easily. Cotto is a small man fighting at 154, and when he fights at 154 I always go for him couse is not fair him fighting with big fighters when we know he can still fight at 147...

Cotto is still a live dog in the game (at 147). I think the most important thing is that him and Roach have good chemistry when working together. If they do, it could potentially help him in his last few fights. He was with one of the GOAT trainers in the late emmanuel Steward, but they just didn't click.

If you thought Cotto didn't get hit enough... He's gonna be even more of a punching bag with Roach in his corner.

Cotto has been his own boss inside and outside the ring for his whole career. At the end of the day, he is doing things his way. Roach sounds nice and can help in some areas but after 4 trainers now in the last 4-5 yrs, what makes you guys think he is going to stay? Cotto just wants to make one last run and what better way than to bring in a new team and get ppl all excited.

I doubt he would just abandon any defense he has learned over the years.

Roach is very over rated & he won't teach this dog new tricks, possible get him 2 adapt some 2 styles...regardless, he'll still b catching shots....

I actually loved the pairing of Cotto and Pedro Diaz. Roach spoke of getting Cotto back to his days of working the body which is an excellent idea. The main issue with Cotto though is him fighting at 154. He can't compete there against the best of the division. If this new team can get Cotto on a different nutrition regimen maybe he can make 147 again. At 147, he would have a chance to win against any of the top fighters besides Pac and Mayweather. All of this is contingent on whether Cotto has the desire to make sacrifices and train his butt off. At the moment, he seems more like a fighter transitioning towards retirement not one who is fighting to remain at the top.

I liked the Cotto that fought Floyd jr. He was strong with heart.
