Calzaghe - the numbers don't lie

Here's some interesting stats on Welsh hero Joe Calzaghe:

During his career, Joe Calzaghe cancelled a total of 12 championship bouts.

Out of 20+ championship fights at super middle, only 5 of his opponents were recognised as top-10 super middleweights when Calzaghe respectively won.

It took 9-years for Calzaghe to fight a unification fight.

He made his 20th title defence against career light middleweight Peter Manfredo in front of 35,000 ardent fans.

It's speculated that Calzaghe first applied for a passport in 2008. Prior to this he may have used European train services to travel the continent. It meant so much to Calzaghe to beat Mario Veit in Germany that when he won he was ecstatic, actually screaming with joy 'I am the man!'.

In his fight against Jones Jr, he went 50/50 against a shot Jones. This fight was such a failed promotion that they gave away an estimated 5,000 tics on fight night. The PPV struggled to reach 200,000 buys. Perhaps it had something to do with his awful HBO debut against Sakio Bika.

What do these stats say about the great half Italian, half Welsh by way of London phenom?

Terrible fighter. Great business man though. He became rich off of something he wasn't very good at.

why did he had to travel? he was the champ, people refused to come over, when they did come over (lacy) he destroyed them, by the end it did harm his career, but imo it was not his fault, america has no divine right to boxing, if guys want the title, they should be willinf to travel, why is it always european fighters traveling?

calzaghe did nothing wrong, yes he got desperate in the end and did travel but he tried his best to get them to come to wales which they never did

hopkins himself admitted years before they fought, he agreed to come to wales to fight the champ, in the end he changed his mind, a lot of guys did that vs calzaghe

challengers who have less status should travel and beat the champ, not force the champion to come to them

I think it is american fans in general, they are happy for their guy to sit at home and wait for guys to come to them, but if a european does it, they make bs threads like these

the reason calzaghe never had bigger fights is because american based fighters ducked him

when he did go over to america, he made two legends his b....especially the racist hopkins, he outboxed him, hopkins and his fans relied on a gift decision, when it never came, they keep making excuses till this day

Oh yeah that makes a lot of sense being that Calzaghe pulled out of a fight with Glen Johnson no less than three separate times!
