Its a kidney punch, not a punch in the ribs. Very few boxers can get up afte one of those, let alone get up an nearly KO the other guy.
Unless you've been hit with one, you just dont know how painful a kidney punch is.

He saw most of Maidana's slow ass punches coming. The complaints about the ref are funny because Maidana landed his best shots from range and was smothering himself on the inside. The shot he hurt Khan with was a looping overhand right. Khan was braced for all that **** on the inside and wasn't being hurt.

He takes the punches very flush though, instead of riding them with upper body or head movement. Some of the punches he took cleanly would have taken an elephant out.

People who criticise the referee are just butt hurt. Maidana was given every opportunity to stop Khan he just couldn't do it. Cortez only split them up when Khan began to hold or when Maidana hit Khan behind the head or pushed his head down. Basically he did his job.
