  • Comments Thread For: Team Gamboa Accuse Top Rank of "Protecting Fighters"

Tony González, manager of Olympic champion Yuriorkis Gamboa, is frustrated that his boxer is unable to secure some of the necessary key matches in the lower divisions. He says the reason Gamboa moved up to 135-pounds is because they were unable to make fights with other contenders and champions at the weight. Gamboa faces undefeated Darley Perez on Saturday night at the Bell Centre in Montreal. HBO will televise the contest.

Gonzalez reflects on Gamboa's past and claims Top Rank kept his fighter away from Juan Manuel "Juamna" Lopez, although both were under the same promotional banner at the time.

They 'protected' his ass when his name was connected to that PED clinic in Miami.

Pretty sure he wasn't even with Top Rank when all this happened.

Gamboa eating sour g****s now that he has left TR and no one gives a **** about him. Let's be honest here, 50 Cent knows as much about boxing promotion as Librace knew about *****.

Gamboa has to take care of business and at least fight 2 more times this year. His inactivity has really been his downfall and he looks pretty chubby at 135

I'm pretty sure both Gamboa and Juanma was being protected by TR at the time in hopes for a megafight down the road, well until Salido got a hold of Juanma.

Gamboa needs to fire who ever is managing his career. TR was lock and loaded with him fighting Rios, which would have been huge, but his team b.tch out.

Say what you want about crusty old Arum, but he didn't have to put this juiced up oompa-loompa on the undercard of one of the biggest fights of last year, especially after the way he left Top Rank.

Agree on everything but the "chubby" part. Gamboa looks pretty massive at 135...and not in a bad way. He always had that pushed-out gut, even at 126. (Some might say it's due to PED abuse.) I'm just curious to see how Yuri performs at the weight. How will his stamina be? How will his speed, power and punch resistance be affected? It's gonna be interesting....
