It was supposed to be a cakewalk fight for his big US debut. Instead he got thrown in with a big, young, hungry welterweight. Hatton went life and death with Collazo before nearly being stopped. Not to mention Collazo was seen as the weak link at welterweight.
Hatton was too small for 147. The guy has a 68" inch reach..
I am not denying that Hatton went for what was the perceived weakest link.. (Collazo fooled quite a few of us) But it was not a backfire.. A cherry pick? Sure.. But not a backfire.

Judah Baldomir..Now that was a backfire.

I don't see how fighting a world title holder for a first fight at a new weight can be classed as a cherry pick myself.

Bute vs Froch how was that a cherrypick? Froch was coming from a loss but it´s not like he was ko´d or obliterated,if anyone thought it would be a mismatch in favor of Bute just...damn.

Bute actually wanted to fight Ward but Ward didn't want the fight so he went for the next best guy in Froch. Bute can't really be accused of cherry picking in this case.

Pacquiao v De La Hoya. At the time people were clamoring for De La Hoya to fight Margarito ( He is a cheating piece of shit so I won't fault De La Hoya for refusing the fight), instead he picked a fighter who was 3 weight divisions south of him. I expected Pacquiao to get bullied, instead he sodomized De La Hoya.

Amir Khan v Briedis Prescott. It was supposed to be his coming out party on ppv, I can remember his flashy entrance. I got the impression that his camp wanted to prove he had a good chin by putting him up against an opponent who's record looked good on paper, but factually wasn't that impressive. Instead Khan did an audition for Rustlers Burgers.

Huh? You're excusing De La Hoya for blatantly ducking Margarito because of something he had absolutely no knowledge of at the time?

Khan v Julio Diaz backfired pretty spectacularly.

It was supposed to be a big homecoming party where he could showcase the skills newly acquired from Virgil Hunter. He ended up getting flattened by a post-prime, blown-up lightweight and running for his life down the stretch.

It was an absolute disaster for Khan and did as much damage to his credibility as the Danny Garcia loss. At least Garcia's a top contender who can punch. When's the last time Diaz dropped a good opponent?
