  • Reasons why a prime Cotto beats Mayweather

As a big fan of both fighters, I say a prime Cotto - the one who fought Margarito and Mosley - beats Mayweather.

Look at their fight at 154lbs, Cotto was considerably slower to the machine he was at welter. You could argue he is slightly past his prime aswell. Yet he still cut the ring off on Floyd, won 4-5 rounds and drew blood from him for the first time in his career.

What do you think guys? Does a prime Cotto beat Mayweather? Or at least go to a split-decision type-of-fight?

I think youre an idiot. You do know Floyd was also closer to his prime when Cotto was getting gifts vs Clottey.. Floyd at 154 is almost a shell of himself..
Floyd stops Cotto at 147, now and then..

Cotto in his prime would never beat mayweather out of his prime. Cotto could never beat Mayweather period.

But he'd also be fighting the 2007 version of Floyd, who was faster himself. He bumfûcked Ricky Hatton who was brilliant at cutting the ring off.

            This is blasphemous.

Mayweather should have taken the fight. I'm not giving him a fantasy victory over a prime Cotto for refusing to take the fight. Fcuk that.

                Cotto vs Floyd circa 2007-08

Cotto was not that experienced in big fights yet but also hadn't taken the damage of fighting judah, mosely and margarito yet

But anyway you slice it- A PRIME FLOYD WOULD BOX COTTO'S EARS OFF AND LEAVE HIM BLOODY AND POSSIBLE STOP HIM LATE

COTTO IS A GREAT FIGHTER, FLOYD THE GREATEST FIGHTER OF HIS ERA

No I don't think so, I think I'm in the minority when I say I don't think Cotto was that far gone if at all physically. I agree he was slower at 154lb, he's never been a true jmw, I also agree he was better at 147. But I don't think that had too much of a bearing on the Mayweather fight. He was in great shape, and very motivated.

I think Cotto would have done better in 2007-2008, pre Margarito, based on the fact that he was an undefeated fighter and mentally he was more of a handful, he didn't know how to lose. I don't think he was ever better and sharper than the Gomez fight and the first 6 rounds against Margarito. That Cotto would have been even more of a handful for Mayweather based on his level of confidence, but I still see Maywether finding a way to win. I see a 8-4, 7-5 (at best) type UD. The only difference I see is Cotto winning 1 or 2 early rounds, and then some of the middle rounds like he did in their actual fight, but Mayweather would always pull away down the stretch because of his superior fitness and skill. Most fighters technique significantly drops in the late rounds, Floyds doesn't. The man is just unbelievable.

There are some Floyd fans here that will say Floyd could have boxed his ears off if he wanted to, he could have boxed and moved and made it easier for himself, don't listen to this...it's nonsense. Cotto is actually hard to hit on the fly, you notice Floyd had most of his success when he planted his feet and fired combinations, and found the angles through Cotto's guard, particularly with the uppercut and hook but this put him in the firing line. When he tried to pot shot, Cotto parried and blocked lots of those shots with his tight guard. Cotto is brilliant at cutting off the ring, and is very accurate with his jab and combinations all things you need to give Floyd trouble. Mayweather would have got trapped at any point in his career, it would have always have taken combinations to keep Cotto off and beat him. Floyd Sr actually said after the fight that Jr would have lost had he not fired combos back and utilised a higher work rate.

To summarise Cotto would have always given him trouble because of his style, but for me Floyd beats him, he is just superior in most departments.

We need to enforce the no new Floyd Mayweather threads. This is getting out of hand.
