Comments Thread For: Miguel Cotto's Adviser Confirms Talks With Freddie Roach

Gabriel Peñagarícano, the legal adviser to former three division world champion Miguel Cotto (37-3, 30KOs) has confrimed that there have been preliminary discussions to establish a working relationship with trainer Freddie Roach, who trains Manny Pacquiao and Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. Cotto had trained for his last few fights with Cuban coach Pedro Diaz. Roach was in Pacquiao's corner when he stopped Cotto in the twelfth round in 2009.

Cotto should work with his uncle Evangelista. He was good back then with Evangelista. Now he's going to be working with a different trainer for every fight and that can not be good.Only Evangelista knew how to work Cotto's style and utilise his power.

Cotto isn't the same fighter that he was when he worked with Evangelista. Father time and some major wars with Pac and Margo have eventually slowly but surely caught up with Miguel..Still a pretty good fighter. Gave Mayweather a tough fight i thought, but was still pretty outgunned i thought. Future HOF'er nonetheless.

Can only be good for cotto. Maybe roach can increase his hand-speed a little.

A little defense will be great too.

            Maybe.

Bad decision if he picks Roach. Roach is a one dimensional trainer. He's offensive minded. He does not teach defense. Cotto will need all around skills to beat Canelo.

I don't think roach values defense as much as diaz with his olympic style background.

Am I the only one who thinks language can be a big barrier between trainers. Let's be honest, Cotto speaks english well enough to get a message across, but he is by no means fluent.

I always felt Cotto's best choice would be a trainer with whom he could establish a bit of a personal relationship (obviously with solid credentials in the sport). Diaz fit the bill perfectly. Garcia and Nacho would be good alternatives too. I just don't see it working with Roach, the same way I didn't see it working with Steward.

That being said, I don't think Roach would be a good fit for Cotto at all regardless of the language he spoke.

cotto vs pacquiao 2 isn't going to happen. although cotto will benefit from sparring pacquaio and vice versa.

hopefully cotto learned some useful techniques switching from trainer to trainer. but Freddy though? isnt he still on a loosing streak?
